Tottenham secured consecutive league victories with a ‘2-0’ win over Nottingham Forest, despite being down a man from the 70th minute on after Yves Bissouma received a red card. It was Tottenham’s second consecutive victory, ending a five-game league winless streak that included four defeats. Nottingham Forest suffered their fifth defeat in a six-game winless streak.
The ‘Bournemouth vs. Luton Town’ match was abandoned after Luton Town captain Tom Lockyer suffers cardiac arrest when the game was tied at ‘1-1’. The match was stopped in the 59th minute.
It took until the second half for the goals to come, but Chelsea ended back-to-back league defeats with a ‘2-0’ home win against bottom-tabled Sheffield United.
Manchester City were back to a winless league game after ending a run of four league games without a win in their ‘2-1’ win against Luton Town in the previous round. Despite a commanding performance and a two-goal lead, Manchester City dropped points at home in a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace. Manchester City conceded two goals after the 75th minute, including a penalty in the fifth minute of added time that allowed Michael Olise to score the equalizer for Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace remains winless in six games, but has avoided a third consecutive league defeat.
Newcastle earned a 3-0 victory over 10-man Fulham. A rash challenge by Raul Jimenez resulted in a red card in the 22nd minute, leaving Fulham at a numerical disadvantage that ultimately contributed to their defeat at Newcastle. Fulham’s 3-0 loss followed back-to-back 5-0 league victories.
Everton secured all three points at Burnley thanks to a two-goal lead in the first half. Amadou Onana and Michael Keane scored in the opening 25 minutes to give Everton a 2-0 victory. This marked a fourth league win in a row for Everton.
Arsenal secured a home victory over Brighton thanks to two second-half goals. A corner kick led to an open Gabriel Jesus, who headed in the opening goal for Arsenal in the 53rd minute. Kai Havertz doubled the lead with three minutes remaining in regulation.
Aston Villa overcame a one-goal deficit to defeat a ten-man Brentford side. Aston Villa took the lead in the second half through a goal from Keane Lewis-Potter in the 45th minute. They held onto the lead for most of the second half, but became more vulnerable after Ben Mee received a red card in the 71st minute, reducing them to ten men. Less than fifteen minutes after Ben Mee was sent off, Aston Villa came from behind to take a 2-1 lead, with Alex Moreno scoring the equalizer in the 77th minute and Ollie Watkins scoring the game-winning goal in the 85th minute.
With a brace from Mohammed Kudus in the first half, West Ham secured a 3-0 victory over Wolves. Jarrod Bowen added the third goal in the 74th minute. The result was what West Ham needed after being thrashed 5-0 by Fulham in the previous league fixture.
Having won ‘7-0’ the last time this fixture was played, and with Manchester United coming off a ‘3-0’ home defeat to Bournemouth in the league and a Champions League exit at the bottom of their group after another defeat at home against Bayern Munich, many expected Liverpool to come out of this tie with the victory to keep their position at the top of the league standings. A goalless draw at the end of the tie felt like a gain for Manchester United and a loss for Liverpool.
