Bayern Munich makes their statement with a big win in the opening round of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League. – Round One of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League.

2020/21 UEFA Champions League

 

Rennes and Krasnodar most likely avoided defeat because they played against each other. Istanbul Basaksehir and Midtjylland were both on the losing end of the score in their respective matches against teams that don’t have a long history in the Champions League.

 

Bayern Munich top Group A knocking Atletico to the bottom of the group.
Atletico are the only team without a point in the group after the opening round. There is work to do for Diego Simeone and his men.

Great start for Shakhtar Donetsk has them topping Group B.
Group B ended with the favorites at the bottom after the opening round. Real Madrid are the only side without a point on board.

Manchester City and Olympiacos kick off Group C with wins to leave Porto and Marseille without points.

Atalanta and Liverpool kicked off Group D with a win to leave Midtjylland and Ajax without points on board.

There were no winners in Group E.

Lazio and Club Brugge kicked off Group F with wins to leave Dortmund and Zenit St. Petersburg without points on the board.

Barcelona and Juventus do the expected and pick up wins in Group G.

Manchester United and RB Leipzig were the winning teams in Group H; leaving Paris St. Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir the losers of the opening round.

 

 

From the leagues with multiple representatives, the English Premier League and the Italian Serie A had the best round. None of their teams suffered defeat with 3/4 winning their match in the opening round.
The teams from the Russian Premier League also went unbeaten in the opening round but only Zenit St. Petersburg finished the round as winners.

Chelsea was the only side from the English Premier League to be without a win.
Inter Milan were the only Italian Serie A side not to win their opening round.

None of the French Ligue 1 sides found a win.
Rennes was the best performer from Ligue 1 with a draw.
PSG and Marseille were both on the losing end of the score.

Borussia Dortmund were the only German Bundesliga side to lose the opening round.
Monchegladbach picked up a draw, while Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig took three points.

Barcelona was the only La Liga side to win in the opening round.
Both Madrid sides were beaten, Real Madrid at home and Atletico Madrid away.
Sevilla managed a point in London.

From the Ukrainnian sides, Shakhar Donetsk were the winners while Dynamo Kyiv saw red.

 

 

Day 1 of Round 1 –

Juventus and Barcelona got the expected outcome.
Club Brugge got a win in Russia.
Dortmund is beaten in Rome.
RB Leipzig kicked off with a win against newcomers Istanbul Basaksehir.
Rennes and Krasnodar shared the points in their first CL group stage appearance.
And Marcus Rashford shocked PSG one more time.

Charles De Ketelaere scored deep in additional minutes to win the match for Club Brugge after an unfortunate own-goal had canceled out their lead. Club Brugge leave as 2-1 winners against Zenit St. Petersburg.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring and assisted the final goal as Barcelona start the tournament with a 5-1 win at home against Ferencvaros. Gerard Pique took a red card and gave away the penalty that allowed Ferncvaros to pull a goal back at 3-0 down.

Chelsea and Sevilla played out the only goalless draw of the day.

Lazio’s questionable domestic form didn’t stop them from picking up three points at home from a 3-1 win against Dortmund.

The biggest game of the round brought the biggest headline of the round. Paris St. Germain were beaten at home by Manchester United. (Again). Marcus Rashford scored a late match winning goal. (Again). Ole gets the result with Manchester United. (Again). The only difference this time is that Neymar was on the pitch for Paris St. Germain. Manchester United were 2-1 winners at Paris.

Angelino fired RB Leipzig to a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes of their home game against Istanbul Basaksehir. The lead stood till the end of the match.
In their group stage debut, both Rennes and Krasnodar avoided defeat by sharing the points.

Liverpool finds a win in Amsterdam.
Manchester City bounce back to beat Porto
A great opening half lead Atalanta to a big win in Denmark.

An inexperienced Shakhtar Donetsk got a win in Madrid against mighty Real Madrid. A second-half fight back from 3-0 down to get a result wasn’t successful as Real Madrid fell short by a goal against Shakhtar Donetsk. What had seemed like the equalizing goal was canceled by VAR for interference by Vinicius Jr; the player who scored to reduce Real Madrid’s deficit to 1 goal after 15 seconds of being introduced from the bench.

Lokomotiv Moscow got a point in Austria from a ‘2-2’ draw against RB Leipzig. An important point for both clubs when Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid are their group mates.

An own-goal decided the match for Liverpool in Amsterdam. Liverpool beat Ajax 1-0 when Nicolas Tagliafico diverted Sadio Mane’s low drive shot into his own net.

Bayern Munich kicked off their title defense season with a statement win against Atletico Madrid. Kinglsey Coman opened and closed the scoring for the match, as Bayern Munich found two goals in each half to send Atletico Madrid home as 4-0 losers.

After scoring to give his side a lead against Monchengladbach, Romelu Lukaku had to score again to save Inter Milan from a defeat at home. It finished 2-2 at San Siro between Inter Milan and Monchengladbach.

Manchester City bounced back from a goal down to avoid an opening day home defeat against Porto. Two second-half goals decided the game; with Ilkay Gundogan scoring the winning goal.

A comfortable first half lead ended allowed Atalanta to pick up a 4-0 win on the road against first-timers Midtjylland. 4 goals from 4 scorers.

They had a goal ruled out by VAR but Olympiacos found one late in additional time to get a winning start at home against Marseille. And in a Group with Manchester City and Porto, it was a needed win for Olympiacos.
