Aston Villa thrashed Brighton 6-1, with Ollie Watkins scoring three goals. This is Aston Villa’s third consecutive league victory, and their fifth overall, which has moved them above Brighton in the standings.
Arsenal transitioned from a North London derby draw to a ‘4-0’ victory against Bournemouth. The result keeps Bournemoth without a league win, and Arsenal unbeaten.
Everton, who had just won their first league game of the season, lost to Luton Town, a newly-promoted team who had not yet won a league game. Luton Town won their first league game of the season, defeating Everton 2-1 away. The score was 2-1 at halftime and remained the same at the end of the game.
Crystal Palace beat Manchester United 1-0 thanks to a goal from Joachim Andersen. The two teams had met in the EFL Cup midweek, with Manchester United winning comfortably. However, United returned to their poor form in the league, losing their third game in four.
Newcastle United followed the 8-0 thrashing of newly-promoted Sheffield United with a ‘2-0’ win over newly-promoted Burnley. The result keeps Burnley without a win.
Sheffield United remains winless after a ‘2-0’ away defeat against West Ham United.
Manchester City’s momentum was seen as a formidable task for Wolves, but in football, surprises are always possible.
Manchester City stood as the sole team in the Premier League with an impeccable winning record, and were expected to get a win to take advantage of the ‘Tottenham vs. Liverpool’ fixture, until Wolves decided that was not going to happen on their turf.
Wolves’ only previous league victory was against a struggling Everton. Manchester City’s perfect start to the season came to an end with a 2-1 away loss to Wolves, with Hee-Chan Hwang scoring the decisive goal in the 66th minute.
Both teams were undefeated going into the game. Tottenham extended their unbeaten run by defeating Liverpool, who were playing with nine men for most of the match. Joel Matip deflected a cross into his own net to give Tottenham a 2-1 victory. Liverpool had a man (Curtis Jones) sent off in the 26th minute for a reckless tackle, and then another player (Diogo Jota) was sent off in the 69th minute for accumulating two yellow cards.
Despite going up a goal, Brentford couldn’t get a win against a 10-man Nottingham Forest.
Chelsea’s second league win of the season came in a West London derby. After three games without a league goal, Chelsea found two against Fulham to win the West London derby.
