Where were the brightest spot over the weekend? – The ‘Star of the Weekend’

Posted on

Picking the outright brightest star is never easy, and sometimes blinding.  There were many bright spots over the weekend, but these candidates made it on our list.

The final shortlist for #SOTW included…

Olivier Giroud (Arsenal – Leicester City) (Premier League) – for coming off the bench to find the late goal that helped Arsenal come from a goal down to secure an opening day victory for the 2017/18 Premier League season.

Wayne Rooney  (Everton – Stoke City) {Premier League}  – for marking his return to Everton with a goal that allowed his side to start the season with the maximum points.

Nemanja Matic  (Manchester United – West Ham) {Premier League}  – for his operation in the midfield that sparked  Manchester United’s dominating performance against West Ham United.

Cristiano Ronaldo  (Barcelona – Real Madrid) {Spanish Super Cup}  – for coming off the bench and scoring the winning goal in an El Clasico to give Real Madrid a good chance of winning the Spanish Super Cup in the second leg.

Radamel Falcao (Dijon – Monaco) {French Ligue 1} – for getting a hat-trick to inspire Monaco’s away victory at Dijon.

Romelu Lukaku (Manchester United – West Ham United) {Premier League} – scoring a brace in his first Premier League match with Manchester United.

….

…..

But the SOTW will have to go to …

Alessandro Murgia

(Juventus – Lazio) {SuperCoppa Italiana}

For winning the Suppercoppa Italiana for Lazio. After his team had lost the lead just a few minutes before, his additional time goal allowed Lazio to win the 2017 Supercoppa Italiana
