From the UEFA Europa League Title to the UEFA Champions League Title?

After winning 3 consecutive Europa League titles with Sevilla, Unai Emery will be coming to PSG to try and do his magic by getting the Ligue 1 giants a continental trophy.

Unai Emery replaces Laurent Blanc as the manager of Paris Saint-Germain. His task will be for him to improve on what Blanc accomplished in his 3 years as boss.  Laurent Blanc achieved domestic success, 3 Ligue 1 titles, 2 Coupe de France titles. 3 Coupe de la Ligue titles and 3 Trophée des Champions titles.

This will be Emery’s second try at taking his professional football career outside of Spain. His last job outside Spain was his four months as head coach of FC Spartak Moscow in Russia, in 2012.

He would be looking forward to lasting longer with his second job in a foreign nation.

PSG in recent years has become the team to beat in French Ligue 1. Domestically, the new giants in European football have done all the task that was set for them to do.

Internationally, they have had a harder time getting past some of Europe’s best. In their last four tries in the UEFA Champions League, Paris Saint- Germain have successfully found themselves eliminated from the competition at the quarter-final stage.

2013 – FC Barcelona eliminated PSG at the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.

2014 – Chelsea eliminated PSG at the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.

2015 – FC Barcelona eliminated PSG at the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.

2016 – Manchester City eliminated PSG at the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.

Unai Emery’s first task will be to get to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain. He would be required to do this without Zlatan Ibrahimovic on his team. The season will show us who will be filling up the expected void Ibrahimovic’s departure will have on the team.

Tactically, Emery usually gets it right. Now he has the backing of a top team, and the finances to get his hands on the players to do the work he envisions. This is will be his best chance to get back at the teams that have eliminated his teams in the UEFA Champions League. This will be an opportunity for Emery to get contend in some knockout  matches in the UEFA Champions League.
