December 6, 2016

Basel                                          1-4                             Arsenal

Seydou Doumbia  78’                                                 Lucas Perez 8’ 16’ 47’

                                                                                       Alex Iwobi 54’

Arsenal scored four at Basel to top Group A.

The only real shot Arsenal had at topping Group A is getting a victory in their final group match at Basel, so they did.

Lucas Perez scored half of Arsenal goals in this match before the halftime break. Just about two minutes after the restart, Perez got his third to end the match with a hat-trick.

Paris Saint-Germain                    2-2                    Ludogorets Razgrad

Edinson Cavani 61’                                              Virgil Misidjan 15’

Angel Di Maria 90’+2’                                           Wanderson 69’

Paris Saint-Germain failed to get a victory that would have allowed them to top group A.  With home advantage and the talent pool of these teams, a 2-2 draw could be considered a victory for Ludogorets Razgrad.

Benfica                                      1-2                          Napoli

Raul Jimenez 87’                                                    Jose Maria Callejon 60’

                                                                                   Dries Mertens 79’

By halftime, the objectives of this fixture had changed from survival to who was going to finish top of Group B.

Napoli came on top against Benfica in a battle to see who would finish top of Group B.

Dynamo Kyiv                             6-0                    Besiktas

Artem Besedin 9’

Andriy Yarmolenko 31’(pen)

Vitaly Buyalskaya 33’

Derlis Gonzalez 45’+3’

Serhiy Sydorchuk 60’’

Junior Moraes 77’

On the brink of leaving the competition without a win, Dynamo Kyiv did their best to make up with their fans by thrashing Besiktas with six goals from six different players.

Besiktas finished the match with 9 men, with a player sent off in each half.

Barcelona                                      4-0                         Borussia Monchengladbach

Lionel Messi 16’

Arda Turan 50’ 53’ 67’

Arda Turan scored a second-half hat-trick  to help Barcelona see off Borussia Monchengladbach from the UCL.  Barcelona topped Group C as most would have expected.

Manchester City                            1-1                    Celtic

Kelechi Iheanacho 8’                                             Patrick Roberts 4’

Manchester City couldn’t find a way to defeat Celtic in the 2016/17 UCL.  Two early goals were shared between the two teams to finish the match in a ‘1-1’ draw.

Bayern Munich                              1-0                Atletico Madrid

Robert Lewandowski 28’

Bayern Munich returned the favor and defeated Atletico Madrid by a goal.  Atletico Madrid finished top of the Group D.

PSV Eindhoven                              0-0                Rostov

The only match that didn’t provide a goal was between PSV Eindhoven and Rostov. Both of the team knew they were on their way out of the competition.

December 7, 2016

Bayer Leverkusen                         3-0                            Monaco

Vladlen Yurchenko 30’

Julian Brandt 48’

Morgan De Sanctis 82’(o.g)

Both teams knew that the outcome of this match couldn’t change the final set-up of Group E. Monaco was going to remain group winners and Bayer Leverkusen was going to be runner-up.

Bayer Leverkusen finished with a 3-0 home win over Monaco just for the records.

Tottenham Hotspur                        3-1                    CSKA Moscow

Dele Alli 38’                                                              Alan Dzagoev 33’

Harry Kane 45’+1’

Igor Akinfeev 77’(o.g)

CSKA bowed out of the competition without securing a victory.

Tottenham Hotspur knew a draw would be enough and CSKA Moscow needed a  victory to remain in the European competition.

Legia Warsaw                               1-0                     Sporting CP

Guilherme 30’

Legia Warsaw only victory in the 2016/17 UCL was enough to send them into the Europa League.

Sporting needed a draw to get into the knockout stages of the Europa League, Legia Warsaw needed a victory to achieve the same goal.

Real Madrid                                   2-2                     Borussia Dortmund

Karim Benzema 28’ 53’                                          Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 61’

                                                                                   Marco  Reus 89’

Title holders Real Madrid failed to top their group.

It was another 2-2 draw between the two teams in the 2016/17 UCL.  Another match that Real Madrid lost the lead late in the match to finish with a point against Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund was two points ahead of Real Madrid before kickoff, so a draw was all they need to top the Group F.

Club Brugge                                    0-2                   Copenhagen

                                                                                     Brandon Mechele 8’ (o.g)

                                                                                    Mathias Jorgensen 15’

Club Brugge bow out of the competition without securing a victory.  Copenhagen gets into the Europa League with this win

Porto                                                5-0                     Leicester City

Andre Silva 6’ 64’(pen)

Jesus Corona 26’

Yacine Brahimi 44’

Diogo Jota 77’

Leicester City fans would hope their domestic form hasn’t found its way into the UCL. Porto thrashed Leicester City to close up the gap between the first and second place in Group G.

It was a good thing Leicester City did not need results from this match.

Juventus                                         2-0                    Dinamo Zagreb

Gonzalo Higuain 52’

Daniele Rugani 73’

Juventus gets a home victory over Dinamo Zagreb. We didn’t expect any other outcome from this fixture.

Dinamo Zagreb bowed out from the competition without a win or a goal scored.

Lyon                                                  0-0                  Sevilla

Lyon needed to beat Sevilla by two or more goals to get to the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League while Sevilla was fine with a draw.

This match didn’t want goals to be scored. All the best chances at goal in this match found its way to the woodwork.

A goalless draw sent Sevilla to the knockout stage.
