THESE DOMESTIC CUP CHAMPIONS ENDED A TITLE DROUGHT IN 2022.

Three of the 2021/22 season domestic cup winners ended a long wait for the silverware. RB Leipzig, FC Nantes, and Real Betis.

RB LEIPZIG PICKED UP THEIR FIRST-EVER MAJOR TITLE IN THE TOP FLIGHT OF GERMAN FOOTBALL WHEN THEY BECAME THE 2022 DFB POKAL CHAMPION.

May 21. 2022: Freiburg 1-1 (a.e.t.) RB Leipzig
Maximilian Eggestein gave Freiburg the lead in the 19th minute but Christopher Nkunku evened the score in the 76th minute to stretch the match into extra time, and eventually a penalty shootout for RB Leipzig to win it 4-2.

 

 



FC NANTES WON THE COUPE DE FRANCE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2000.
It was also their first major silverware since their 2001 league title and the resulting Trophée des Champions title.

May 7. 2022: Nice 0-1 FC Nantes
Ludovic Blas scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 47th minute.

 

 



REAL BETIS WON THE COPA DEL REY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2005.
Apart from securing promotion from the Segunda División as champions (2011, 2015), last year’s Copa del Rey title was Real Betis’s most recent title.

April 23. 2022: Real Betis 1-1 (a.e.t.) Valencia
Yunus Musah’s miss in the penalty shootouts was the difference maker. Real Betis won 5-4 in the penalty shootouts.


ALL THREE TEAMS HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE AT ANOTHER SILVERWARE THROUGH THE DOMESTIC SUPER CUPS.

July 30. 2022: DFL-Supercup (german Super Cup) – RB Leipzig vs Bayern Munich
July 31. 2022: Trophée des Champions (French Super Cup) – Paris St. Germain vs Nantes

Real Betis will be part of the four teams that will be contesting for the Supercopa de Espana (Spanish Super Cup). They will join Real Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona.
