The ‘Weekend Bangers’ involve clashes to alter the top of the league standings, and others to amend recent results.

Weekend Domestic League Fixtures

October 20, 2018

Manchester United vs Chelsea (Premier League)

Can Manchester United and Jose Mourinho get positive results at Stamford Bridge against a Chelsea side that remain unbeaten since the start of the season?

Apart from remaining unbeaten, Chelsea wouldn’t want to fall out of the 3-way tie at the top of the league.

A Manchester United defeat will put them 10 points behind Chelsea, as well as being at a high risk of falling 10 points behind Manchester City and Liverpool by the end of the day.

Wolfsburg vs Bayern Munich (Bundesliga)

It rare to see Bayern Munich go through multiple matches in the Bundesliga without a win, and even rarer to see them lose consecutive matches. Bayern will need to beat Wolfsburg to calm down the nerves of supporters and avoid allowing a case where the other teams can ‘smell blood’. It’s early in the season and there is enough time to make up the four points that is separating them from the top of the league table. The objective here for Bayern is to get the maximum points away at Wolfsburg.

Schalke 04 vs Werder Bremen (Bundesliga)

When you just started winning games in the league, the last thing you would want is facing an opposition that at the top end of the league standings.  Schalke 04 would be hoping that home support will carry them to their third win in a row. On the other hand, Werder Bremen is a victory away from tying for the top spot in the league.

Strasbourg vs Monaco (Ligue 1)

Getting a point won’t be good enough for Monaco. A win is their only option. It is far from an easy task to ask this Monaco side to end their match on the right end of the scoreline at Strasbourg. Monaco has gone 10 competitive matches without a win. Currently in the relegation zone which was not the expectation for a team that was the league champions two seasons ago.  Is Strasbourg away going to be how Monaco end their spiral down into relegation?

Real Madrid vs Levante (La Liga)

No goals in four games and unexpected defeats. Real Madrid will have to get this right at home against Levante. The ‘No Cristiano, No Party’ tag can’t be allowed to carry on for two long

Barcelona vs Sevilla (La Liga)

After 4 winless games that included a shocking defeat to Leganes, Barcelona has ‘maxed’ out on the ‘dropped points’ allowed by fans at this point. Only a home victory against Sevilla would be seen as a positive result. The top of the league table is on the line for these two sides. A draw will leave both sides open to drop down in their league ranking.

Borussia Monchengladbach vs Mainz 05 (Bundesliga)

Borussia Monchengladbach can go from beating Bayern Munich to potentially being tied at top spot with a victory at home against Mainz 05.

Saint-Etienne vs Rennes (Ligue 1)

A place in the champions league for next season is the race for the rest of the league when projections are being made from the current form of the teams.  Saint-Etienne could edge their way to be part of the top four in the standings with a victory at home over Rennes.

Inter Milan vs AC Milan (Serie A) Milan Derby

Derby della Madonnina

Your position in the league standings matters little in a local derby.

Inter Milan and AC Milan are both on a winning streak, making it the perfect time for both teams to meet. Despite 6 teams between them in the league standings, a victory for AC Milan will cut the gap in points to one.

Arsenal vs Leicester City (Premier League)

Six straight wins in the league (9 in all competitions). Arsenal’s winning streak is going to be put to the test when Leicester City comes to visit. After back to back defeats to start their season, Arsenal is currently 2 points away from equaling the points needed to be at the top of the league at the moment.
