The second quarter of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League ‘Round of 16’

It wasn’t a surprise when Willian scored the opening goal of the match to give Chelsea the lead against Barcelona. He had already struck the post on two occasions in the first-half. Chelsea came with into the match with a game plan that almost paid off, but a mistake was all Barcelona needed to get level after Willian had given the home side a lead in the 62nd-minute. Lionel Messi scored his first ever goal against Chelsea to give Barcelona an away goal in a ‘1-1’ draw of the first-leg Round of 16 match. All to play for in the second-leg of this tie.

It took until the end of the first-half for Bayern Munich to break down a Besiktas side that had been reduced to 10-men after just 16-minutes into the match. A numerical and home advantage was not wasted by Bayern Munich. Besiktas concede the same amount of goals in one match as they had in their entire group stage round of the competition. Both Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski scored a brace for Bayern Munich to go into the second leg in a position that allows for an experimental squad.

David De Gea goalkeeping heroics kept Manchester United alive and a chance to make home advantage count in the second-leg.
Sevilla and Manchester United played out a goalless draw while Roma gave up a first-half lead to suffer a ‘2-1’ defeat away against Shakhtar Donetsk.
