1992 and 2016 were the only times the host nations finished as gold medalists. Spain won in Barcelona in 1992, and Brazil won in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Who is winning the gold medal this time around? Uruguay couldn’t make a return for this edition, and neither could the reigning gold medalist, Brazil.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL AT THE 2024 SUMMER OLYMPICS

The gold medal has only skipped North America on two occasions, with Norway and Germany being the winners in those years. Norway is not here this tournament, but the other three past gold winners are: Canada has a gold medal to defend, the United States will look to get their fourth gold medal, while Germany looks to reclaim the gold medal.

France, the host nation, has never finished on the podium. The same goes for Australia, Colombia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Spain, and Zambia. Brazil were silver medalists on two occasions, losing consecutive finals against the United States (2004 and 2008). Japan were silver medalists in 2012, losing against the United States. That marked three straight gold medals for the United States, adding to their win of the first-ever gold medal in women’s Olympic football in 1996.

The United States have had a podium finish in every tournament except for one (2016). Canada were bronze medalists in the two tournaments prior to winning their first gold medal in 2020. Germany has three bronze medals along with their gold.
