UEFA Champions League, the Nations and teams.

 

To most, this is the biggest club competition in the World. It is also regarded as the competition with the most elite set of players in contention for a silverware. Very few teams have had the honors of winning European title.

22 teams from 9 nations in Europe can proudly claim to have been a winner of this competition. It’s like putting all the ‘cool kids’ into one classroom and waiting to see who becomes rise up and be the ‘cool kid’ of the ‘cool kids’ class

Of the 9 nations to have had a winning team, 5 of them are lucky enough to have multiple teams from their league system win the competition. England has the most UCL title winning sides. Five teams from England have sometime in their past been the kings of Europe. No European nation has more. And credit to Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, who account for over 50 % of the trophy won in their nation.

It feel different, and it raises different questions, but early elimination from a competition hurts just as much as late elimination. No matter the stage of the competition, getting eliminated is painful.

Some teams have had bad luck in the final stage of the UCL than others. Some teams have never lost a final, whilst others never won one. Some have won more than they’ve lost, while others can look at their losses in the finals and wonder how up in the stats the team will be if results had gone in their favor in just one more match.

 

In 2015, Juventus topped the list of unluckiest finalist is UCL. They’ve appeared in the final 8 times and on just 2 occasions have they walked away with the silverware. Benfica follows suite, the Portuguese have won just 2 of the 7 finals they’ve participated. Bayern Munich have won just as many finals as they’ve lost.

 

Some teams have made it to the final and never won, sometimes on multiple occasions. Stade de Reims (FRANCE), Atletico Madrid (SPAIN), Valencia (SPAIN) made it to the final on 2 occasions and are yet to have their hands on the silverware.
