Haiti’s introduction to Copa America ended in 1-0 defeat to Peru at the CenturyLink Stadium,Seattle.
In the first Group B match of the Copa America Centenario, Peru collected all points and move ahead to face what is seemingly stronger opposition.

The match started off in Haiti’s half. Peru seemed to be looking for an early goal while Haiti sat back and analyzed their oppositions strength while looking for long balls into their attacking third for a counter attack.

As they scoreboard stayed the same, confidence grew for the Haitian side. Momentum was shifting to make the game a balanced one. There was a feeling that a goalless scoreline will be an advantage to Haiti.

As much as their confidence grew, Haiti remained committed to their defensive tactics by staying behind the ball at all times.

The most dangerous moment for both teams came late in the first half as Haiti had an amazing scoring opportunity from a corner kick. Peru had a better chance when Guerrero knocked the post in the 45th minute.

At halftime, it was difficult to tell who had the better odds of securing a win. A draw was looking very likely.

A diving header in the 61st minute by Guerrero decided the match. Guerrero should have had a couple of goals by then.

Haiti did not give up. They kept pressing, but Peru was comfortable throughout the game.

A late fight from Haiti almost brought them the equalizer they were desperately searching for. A 94th-minute free kick, lead to an inviting header for Haiti’s No.9 Kervens Belfort. It was a heartbreaking miss for the forward.

Knowing the remaining opposition ahead in Group B, Haiti needs to forget about this match and get their heads back in the tournament, if they are to have any shot of qualifying.

Peru has done itself a favor. Another win, or undefeated run should get them to the knockout stage.
