Messi and Argentina stopped America from dreaming.

NRG Stadium, Houston.

United States 0-4  Argentina

A record breaking night for Lionel Messi! All time highest goal scorer for Argentina.

                       Ezequiel Lavezzi (3’)

                       Lionel Messi (32’)

                       Gonzalo Higuain (50’) (86’)

Argentina is the first team in the Copa America Centenario final. Who will be joining them? Chile(defending champions) or the exciting new generation of Colombian players?

Messi and his Argentine teammates destroyed the host nation in the Copa America Centenario semifinal.

Argentina was the favorite to win the match, but with an inspired USMNT that is backed by tremendous fan support can complete some impossible task on any given day.

Argentina is ranked as the best team in the world, and they carry with them the best player in the world as well. Aside from. Lionel Messi, Argentina can boast of a great quality in their attacking set. It will take great concentration from any team to deny the Argentines from scoring a goal.

The final score was 4-0 to Argentina. United States were behind by the 3rd minute. A chipped from Messi and a failed  attempt by United States defense to create an offside trap allowed Lavezzi to get a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper. Lavezzi’s gave Argentina the winning goal with a  header.

Ezequiel Lavezzi had to be substituted out of the match in the 71st minute due to an injury. A lobbed pass towards him had his eyes on the ball and forgot about the advertising boards behind him. He tripled over the boards and landed abnormally, injuring his arm. We hope recovery doesn’t take too long.

An attempt to stop Messi gave away a foul that allowed Messi to score from a free kick. It was a beauty and a goal that made him the highest goalscorer for Argentina with 55 goals. Gabriel Batistuta wouldn’t mind losing his record to such a goal and player. It was a goal that placed Messi a goal behind Eduardo Vargas in the quest to finish as ‘golden boot’ winner in the competition.

Lack of discipline and concentration from the Americans, fueled by a pressing Argentine offense allowed in two more goals in the second half.

Gonzalo Higuain scored two goals in the second half to see off the United States.

United State will play for bronze against the losing side in the Colombia v Chile match. They will probably want a second chance at Colombia in the Copa America Centenario, or they might get the opportunity to show their biggest CONCACAF rival, Mexico how to play against Chile.

Copa America Centenario finale is going to be an all CONMEBOL affair.

The last four teams in the Copa America Centenario are the winners and the runners-up of Group A and Group B. The winners faced each other in the first semifinal of the competition. Group D came out on top.
The next semifinal will have the runners-up face each other. Group A or Group D? We will be waiting.
