Index Ranking: European Football Landscape: Bayern Munich Dominates, Girona Shines, and Manchester City Lead the PL.

A SNAPSHOT OF THE CURRENT STATE OF PERFORMANCE IN EUROPEAN CLUB FOOTBALL.

THE TOP TEN POSITIONS: LA LIGA LEADS WITH SIX CLUBS IN TOP 10.
Six La Liga, three Bundesliga, two Premier League, and one Serie A team make up the top 10. There is no representation from Ligue 1, Primeira Liga, or Eredivisie sides in the ‘top 10’. Paris St. Germain comes in 12th as the best-performing Ligue 1 club, a position ahead of PSV Eindhoven, the best performers in the Eredivisie, while Sporting CP comes in 34th as the best-performing Primeira Liga side.

Bayern Munich headed into the international break as the best-ranked team in Europe’s top seven domestic leagues. They are not at the top of the Bundesliga yet, but in terms of performance, they are. Bayer Leverkusen, who tops the German Bundesliga standings, comes in second.

GIRONA’S REMARKABLE RISE: EIGHTH IN EUROPE, LEADING THE WAY IN LA LIGA.
Girona shows up in eighth with the outstanding season they are having in the Spanish La Liga, being at the top of the league table as things stand. Despite not leading the La Liga standings, Real Madrid is the best-performing Spanish club, ahead of Atletico Madrid.

Manchester City is at the top of the English Premier League, ranking as the third-best performing club in Europe, behind only Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen. Manchester City and Liverpool (seventh) are the two Premier League clubs in the top 10. Barcelona barely made the ‘top 10’, edging out Arsenal by a point. Inter Milan is the only Italian Serie A side to make it into the ‘top 10’.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS: BAYERN MUNICH REIGNS, BENFICA LAGS AT 45TH.
Since Bayern Munich is at the top of the pile, we know they are the best performers among the reigning champions. With Sporting CP being the best-performing Portuguese club at 34th, it is evident that Benfica is the worst performer among the reigning champions. Benfica comes in at 45th, despite topping the Portuguese Primeira Liga standings as things stand. Title defense looks difficult for Napoli, as they rank 20th and sit fourth in the Italian Serie A standings.

RECENTLY PROMOTED: FROSINONE EXCELS AS EUROPE’S BEST-PERFORMING NEWCOMER.
Frosinone is the best-performing of the promoted sides in Europe’s top seven leagues. They are 56th, 11 positions better than the nearest promoted club, Las Palmas.

THE BOTTOM TEN POSITIONS: BURNLEY RANKS LOWEST AMONG PROMOTED CLUBS.
Surprisingly, the worst-rated club isn’t a recently-promoted club. The worst performer among the promoted clubs is Burnley, at 127th out of the 132 clubs. Salernitana is the worst-performing side among the top five leagues, coming in at 130th. The worst-performing club in Europe’s top seven leagues is Arouca from the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
