Hungary denies Iceland their first win in a major tournament.

Group F Stade Velodrome, Marseille

Iceland                             1-1     Hungary

Gylfi Sigurdsson  40’ (pen)          Birkir Saevarsson 88’ (og)

Iceland was just a few minutes from securing their first win in a major tournament before losing it to an own goal.

Both teams were coming on a certain high after their first match. Hungary had an improbable win against Austria, while Iceland had an improbable draw against Portugal.

It was a well-deserved result for Hungary as they had to fight from a goal down to get results that puts them on top of Group F.

A first half penalty for Iceland was converted by Gylfi Sigurdsson. Iceland took their 1-0 lead into halftime and came back to protect that lead in the second half.

Hungary was aware of the quality they had on their team. They kept pushing for a goal throughout the second half. They were relentless and got their reward in the 88 minute when a shot across the Icelandic goal forced Birkir Saevarsson to push the ball into his own net. It was a deserving goal for Hungary, as they had been the only team trying to get a goal in the second half.

A late freekick gave Iceland a final opportunity to steal the win from Hungary. It was a close miss, and Hungary marches on with 4 points to the top of Group F table.

Iceland will be playing Austria, and Hungary will be playing Portugal in the final Group F matches.
