Ghana’s World Cup Overview

Posted on

Ghana (the Blackstars)  in Brazil……..

Their debut in the Fifa World Cup was in 2006 and ever since then they have been been a regular face in the competition.  This will be their 3rd appearance in the competition.

The 4 time continental champions are coming into the World Cup on a 5-0-1 (W-D-L) record in the fourth round  CAF qualifiers.  They won convincingly against Egypt with a 7-3 aggregate scoreline.  It is looking like the golden generation for Ghana, but they are yet to win a major trophy to make a mark in history.

The Venom

Asamoah Gyan is the main striker for the team. The number on the back of his shirt is fit for a full back, instead of a forward. Gyan an entertaining figure who adds a boost to the team more morale, aside from his goals.

Asamoah Gyan

Gyan has been responsible for most of Ghana’s memorable moments in the World Cup. Unfortunately, these moments are not all so great. We will be be to see playing more of a conductor role in the attack. He gets the best of defenders because he strikes when you least expects.

Up front for the Blackstars are Abdul Majeed Waris, Jordan Ayew and Dominic Adiyiah

The Control and Support

The attacking strength will be coming from the backing of the midfield. The two veterans of the team, and international stars in their own rights will be in control of the midfield. Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari, two veterans who are also team mates at AC Milan, will be doing their duties of breaking down the progress of opposition attacks and orchestrating the offensive attack.

Essien keeping ball possession with ease

Other supporting cast in the midfield who will be playing more as supporting strikers will be Kevin Prince-Boateng. Boateng is another Milan player who has moved to the German side, Schalke 04.  Andre Ayew from Olympique Marseille and Kwadwo Asamoah from Juventus.

The Bouncers

The back line is tough line-up that manages to allow very few goals. There might not be any ‘international stars’ in the line-up, but they get the job done. Look out for the following; Samuel Inkoom, Jonathan Mensah,Harrison Afful and Daniel Opare

So what is it for Ghana?  How will they fare?

Portugal might be the new foe in their group.  They lost 1-0 to Germany the last time both teams shared a group. As for the United States, there is a new rivalry that has been built. Ghana has been the team to deliver the knock-out blow to the Yanks in their recent attempts in the World Cup. In 2006 and 2010.

The odd might not be in their favor to get out of this group.  The UEFA teams are looking to snatch that advantage. But this Ghanaian team have proven to excel in futbol tournaments. They have managed to avoid getting knocked-out it the Fifa World Cup group stage, and they’ve managed to be the Yanks killer. That is a positive for the team.It is looking like an exciting match-ups for the Blackstars.

But this is futbol, there will be some drama, suspense and surprises.  And that is why we will have to be watching to see if Ghana will make their advantage coun
