The opening round of the season brought about 6 winners and 6 losers, leaving 6 teams that ended up sharing the points. Newly-promoted Le Havre avoided defeat at Montpellier, but Metz was thrashed 5-1 by Rennes. The win put Rennes at the top of the league table after the opening round.

The top two from last season did not start their season with a win. The defending champions (Paris St. Germain) were part of the third group that could not find a win. They kicked off their season with a goalless draw against Lorient. Lens also kicked off their season with a defeat to Brest.

Bafode Diakite’s goal in the 4th minute of added time saved Lille from a defeat against Nice. Marseille came from a goal down to start their season at home with a 2-1 win over Reims. It was a goalless start for the defending champions in Paris as PSG shared the points with Lorient. Romain Del Castillo scored a brace, including an 87th-minute game-winning penalty for Brest to start their season with a win against Lens. Wissam Ben Yedder scored a brace (including the eventual game-winning goal) for Monaco to come from behind and grab the three points in a 4-2 win over Clermont Foot. Akor Adams scored two goals in quick succession to get Montpellier from an early goal down to a lead, but newly-promoted Le Havre avoided defeat through a goal in the 90th minute. Rasmus Nicolaisen scored an injury-time goal for Toulouse to come from an early goal down and complete a comeback with a 2-1 win at Nantes. Four goals in the second half allowed Rennes to kick off their season with a 5-1 win against newly-promoted Metz. Lyon kicked off their season in Strasbourg with a 2-1 defeat.
