France win Group A and Albania gets a first win.

Posted on

Final group match for Group A saw Switzerland going against France in Lille, while Romania faces Albania in Lyon.

France was on top of the group with 6 points and a +3 goal difference.

Switzerland was  on 4 points with a +1 goal difference.

Romania had 1 point with a -1 goal difference.

Albania had 0 points with a -3 goal difference.

Romania would love for a French win as they took care of business against an Albanian team that hadn’t scored a goal in a major competition.

France was already over the finish line and was playing to win the group.

Switzerland had their destiny in the hands. As long as they didn’t lose to France, they would be through to the knockout stage.

Albania could survive the competition with a win. But for a team that is experiencing the tournament for the first time in history, their priority was getting on the scoreboard.

France was the only team in the final match day that could afford a loss. The 3 remaining teams were battling to advance out of Group A.

At the end of the first half, Albania was the team that had found the net. Armando Sadiku’s 43rd-minute goal ended up being the only goal in the final match day of Group A.

It was the first goal ever scored in a major tournament by Albania, and it was also their first win recorded in a major tournament.

The was enough time for things to change on the scoreboard, but good defense and subpar attacks allowed the scoreline to remain the same.

Romania is eliminated from the 2016 European Championship. Albania will find out later if they are amongst the top 3 third place finishers who will get an entrance to the knockout stage.

It was a win for Switzerland, and a mission accomplished for France.

Final table looks like this….

Group A
Team Played Win Loss Draw GF GA Points
France 3 2 0 1 4 1 7
Switzerland 3 1 0 2 2 1 5
Albania 3 1 2 0 1 3 3
