Football this weekend: League titles and relegations can be confirmed by the end of the round.

WEEKEND BANGERS

The title race is over in Italy, almost over in Spain and in the Netherlands, on track in France, and it remains a tight one in Germany, and in England.

Barcelona and Feyenoord are ready to be crowned league champions.

Dutch Eredivisie:

LEAGUE STANDINGS – EREDIVISIE
1 | Feyenoord ( 31 ) – 76 points
2 | PSV Eindhoven ( 31 ) – 68 points
3 | Ajax ( 31 ) – 63 points
4 | AZ Alkmaar ( 31 ) – 61 points

In the Dutch Eredivisie, Feyenoord finds themselves just one point away from clinching the title. They will have a home game against Go Ahead Eagles.

PSV Eindhoven is also on the verge of securing a Champions League qualification spot, with just one point needed. They will be playing at home against Fortuna Sittard.

Ajax has the opportunity to finish the season strong and potentially secure a third-place finish, granting them a spot in the Europa League playoff round. They will face an away match against FC Groningen.

AZ Alkmaar is currently posing a threat to Ajax’s position in the league standings. They will have a home game against FC Emmen.

Premier League:

Manchester City with a game in hand and a two-point lead in the title race, will face a relegation-threatened Everton side that has been boosted by a 5-1 away win against Brighton in the previous round. The reverse match resulted in a 1-1 tie.

Arsenal must win to keep tabs on Manchester City in the title race. They will be at home against a Brighton side coming off a 5-1 home defeat to Everton. Brighton’s ambition of qualifying for a continental cup football remains alive if they can bounce back with a win in London against title-contending Arsenal.

Newcastle United and Manchester United have dropped points, allowing the race for Champions League qualification to heat up once again. The two clubs are being chased by Liverpool, Brighton, and Tottenham.

Liverpool and Newcastle United will face relegation-threatened teams.
Liverpool will be against a Leicester City side that conceded 5 goals in their last game, while Newcastle United will face a relegation-threatened Leeds United side that is in desperate need of a win after losing 5 of their last 6 games.

Manchester United will need a win against Wolverhampton Wanderers to bounce back from consecutive defeats.

There are three points between Tottenham and Aston Villa. – Tottenham can double the point gap by winning consecutively after 4 games without a win, or Aston Villa can clear the point gap by bouncing back to their winning ways after losing two consecutive league games following a run of 10 unbeaten matches that consisted of 8 wins.

It’s mathematically possible for West Ham to be relegated, but it is highly improbable at three points from safety. West Ham will be at Brentford for a result that will confirm their Premier League status for the coming season.

A relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest will have their work cut out for them when they travel to face a Chelsea side that is more relaxed after securing safety.

German Bundesliga:

Bayern Munich currently holds a one-point lead in the title race over Borussia Dortmund with just three more rounds remaining of the Bundesliga season. Both clubs will play their games at home this weekend.

To maintain that lead, Bayern Munich will need to defeat Schalke, a side fighting to avoid relegation. Borussia Dortmund will face Borussia Monchengladbach.

RB Leipzig, Union Berlin, and Freiburg are competing for the two remaining Champions League qualification spots in the league, with just one point separating the three teams. Union Berlin and Freiburg will go head-to-head in Berlin this weekend, providing RB Leipzig an opportunity to capitalize on that draw with a win against Werder Bremen; a team just a few points away from safety. Three points will suffice.

Hoffenheim will travel to Wolfsburg in search of points to aid their battle against relegation.

Bottom-tabled Hertha Berlin made a late push by securing a win against Stuttgart in the last round. They will need a victory in Cologne to keep their fight going.

Augsburg is one win away from safety, while Bochum needs a win to prolong the fight against relegation. The two teams will meet in Bochum.

Spanish La Liga:

Barcelona is two points away from becoming La Liga champions, and they have multiple ways to secure the title this weekend. One way is to achieve it with a win in the Catalan derby against Espanyol. Another way is if Atletico Madrid fails to secure a victory in Elche.

Aside from securing Champions League football for the upcoming season, Atletico Madrid aims to finish above Real Madrid in the standings. They currently hold a one-point lead that they would like to maintain with a win against relegated Elche.

Real Madrid enters this match after a 1-1 draw in their midweek Champions League semifinal game against Manchester City. They will host Getafe with the second leg of the semifinal tie in mind. This situation favors Getafe, as they need points to aid their fight to escape the relegation zone.

Real Sociedad has Villarreal and Real Betis chasing them for their Champions League qualification spot in the league. Real Sociedad plans to keep the chasers at bay with a home win against Girona. Villarreal will host Athletic Club, and Real Betis will host Rayo Vallecano.

French Ligue 1:

The top four teams will be playing at home this weekend.
Paris St. Germain is six points away from the title and can cut that in half by beating Ajaccio side that will likely be relegated with a loss.

Lens (coming off a win against Marseille) will aim for another victory against Reims, while Marseille will look to recover from their defeat by securing a win against relegated Angers.
Lens and Marseille are competing for second place and direct qualification to the Champions League.

In 5th place, Lille can narrow the gap between themselves and 4th place to two points if they win in Monaco.

After losing the Coupe de France title to Toulouse, Nantes will face them again, this time in pursuit of points to help them escape the relegation zone.

Brest and Auxerre are just outside the relegation zone and will meet to fight for points that would move them further away from relegation. A Nantes win against Toulouse will put pressure on both teams to secure a victory.

Italian Serie A:

Napoli, the newly crowned Serie A champions, will play their first away game against Monza. Both teams have only scored one goal in each of their last two league games. Although there isn’t much at stake for either club, it’s always enjoyable to watch the champions play.

Napoli’s title win leaves three spots for Champions League qualification through the league, with six teams in contention: Juventus, Lazio, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Atalanta, and Roma. There are a maximum of 12 points remaining for these six clubs to secure their final positions in the league.

Juventus, Lazio, and Inter Milan will play at home this weekend, while AC Milan, Atalanta, and Roma will be on the road.
Juventus, AC Milan, Lazio, and Atalanta will face teams fighting for points to aid their battles against relegation. Juventus and Lazio will host Cremonese and Lecce, respectively, while AC Milan and Atalanta will visit Spezia and Salernitana, respectively.

Roma, winless in their last four league matches with two defeats, will aim to end their poor run of results in Bologna.

Empoli is one point away from safety and will strive to secure that point against relegated Sampdoria.

Teams seeking points to avoid relegation threats will face challenging fixtures this weekend.

Hellas Verona has the best chance on paper when they host Torino.

Spezia has a tough task ahead as they host AC Milan. Spezia is without a league win in eight games (five defeats) and is at risk of suffering a fourth straight defeat against an AC Milan side looking for results to recover from their midweek Champions League semifinal loss against Inter Milan.

Lecce will be in Rome against Lazio, who are aiming to bounce back from their defeat in Milan in the previous round. Lecce’s only victory in their last 11 matches was a 1-0 home win over Udinese. They have lost nine of those 11 matches but were 2-1 winners against Lazio in the reverse fixture.

Salernitana’s 2-1 defeat to Empoli in the last round was their first league loss in 11 matches. Although they have only won two of those games, they will look to achieve something in their match against Atalanta.

Cremonese has a buffer of about two games before joining Sampdoria in the list of relegated teams. While a win against Juventus in Turin seems improbable, it is necessary.
