EURO 2020

It’s hard to call any upsets.
Poland missing out on the Round of 16 might be the closest thing to an upset when it comes to teams that failed to qualify for the ‘Round of 16’.

ITALY 1-0 WALES
Italy wins Group A after a 1-0 victory over a Welsh side that ended up with 10 men.
Italy went through the group stage scoring by winning 3 out of 3 matches, scoring 7 goals and conceding none.

SWITZERLAND 3-1 TURKEY
Turkey was eliminated but scored their first goal of the tournament in a 3-1 defeat against Switzerland.
With Ukraine and Finland both losing their final games in their respective groups, Switzerland earned a place in the Round of 16 with their victory.

Group B had an interesting end.
While Belgium won every game in Group B, the other teams won one and lost the other two.
Belgium wins ‘Group B’ by winning all their 3 matches; scoring 7 goals and conceding 1. They closed the round with a’2-0’ win against Finland.

FINLAND 0-2 BELGIUM
RUSSIA 1-4 DENMARK
NORTH MACEDONIA 0-3 NETHERLANDS
UKRAINE 0-1 AUSTRIA

Despite losing their first two matches Denmark advanced to the ‘Round of 16’ by grabbing a ‘4-1’ over Russia to take full advantage of the results in the other match (Finland vs Belgium).
A ‘2-0’ win for Belgium against Finland in the last match meant little to Belgium, carried a lot of cost to Finland, and was a massive advantage for Denmark.

Netherlands won Group C with three wins from three. They closed the round with a 3-0 win against an already eliminated North Macedonia.
In the other game, Christoph Baumgartner’s goal allowed Austria to beat Ukraine for second place in Group C.

CROATIA 3-1 SCOTLAND
CZECH REPUBLIC 0-1 ENGLAND

Croatia came second to England in the group, and they both moved on to the Round of 16 with Czech Republic.
Luka Modric inspired Croatia to a 3-1 win against Scotland to finish second in Group D.
England used an early goal from Raheem Sterling to secure a ‘1-0’ win over Czech Republic.
Czech Republic’s were lucky their first defeat in Group D didn’t stop them from securing a ‘ Round of 16’ qualification on the day.

SLOVAKIA 0-5 SPAIN
SWEDEN 3-2 POLAND

In the end, Sweden restored their lead to win the match and win the Group.
Sweden and Spain advanced from Group E after being the winners on the day.

Two goals from Robert Lewandowski restored hope for Polish fans in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Viktor Claesson scored the final goal of the match in the remaining minute of the additional time to restore the lead for Sweden after Lewandowski had scored two goals to cancel out the lead Emil Forsberg had given Sweden.

Spain’s first win of the tournament came in their final group game; and it was a big win. Spain were 5-0 winners against Slovakia.
Alvaro Morata failed to get Spain in the lead in the 12th minute when he failed to convert a penalty kick into a goal.
Martin Dubravka punched the ball into his own net to give Spain the lead at the hour mark, before Aymeric Laporte doubled the lead with his first goal for his new national team.
In the end, three goals were sandwiched in two own goals for Spain to finish second in Group E.

PORTUGAL 2-2 FRANCE
GERMANY 2-2 HUNGARY

There wasn’t any positional change in Group F after both games ended in a 2-2 draw.
We didn’t expect much from Hungary at the start of the competition, but they put up a fight till the end; and got Germany wondering if they were getting an early exit. Germany had to come from a goal down on two occasions to save their tournament. Leone Goretzka’s 84th-minute goal moved Germany from the bottom of the Group to second place.

Portugal shared the points after evenly sharing 4 goals. Three of those goals came through questionable penalties.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals from the penalty spot to equal Ali Daei’s record of international goals (109).
