Domestic Leagues

Europe’s top seven leagues in the 2022/23 season.

As we head into the 2023/24 season, let’s take a look at how teams from Europe’s t-7 leagues performed in the 2022/23 season:

Feyenoord won the Dutch Eredivisie for the 16th time, and first time since 2016/17. Manchester City clinched their third consecutive English Premier League title, edging out Arsenal, and their ninth overall. It was also their first treble-winning season. Paris Saint-Germain surpassed Saint-Étienne’s 10 titles to become the most successful club in French Ligue 1 history after winning their 11th Ligue 1 title. Bayern Munich’s dominance of the Bundesliga continued despite a mediocre season. They won the title on the final day of the season, against all expectations, to make it 11 consecutive years as champions, bringing their title total to 32. Napoli won the Italian Serie A title for the third time in their history, and for the first time in 31 years, in a stunning upset. Benfica have won the Portuguese Primeira Liga for the 38th time, breaking the record for most titles, and for the first time since the 2018-19 season. Barcelona cruised to their 27th La Liga title, winning comfortably with a strong defense and a consistent attack.

Manchester City won the UEFA Champions League for the first time, beating Inter Milan in the final. Sevilla won their seventh Europa League title, defeating Roma in a penalty shootout. West Ham United won the UEFA Conference League, beating Fiorentina.

As defending Champion League winners, Real Madrid went on to win the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

In domestic cup competitions, Real Madrid claimed the Copa del Rey in Spain, while Inter Milan lifted the Coppa Italia in Italy. Toulouse emerged victorious in the Coupe de France, and RB Leipzig secured the DFB-Pokal in Germany. Manchester City triumphed in the FA Cup, while PSV Eindhoven and Porto won the KNVB Cup and Taça de Portugal, respectively.

In the domestic Super Cups and Community Shields, Porto claimed victory in the Supertaça, Bayern Munich won the DFL-Supercup, and Liverpool emerged victorious in the FA Community Shield. PSV Eindhoven secured the Johan Cruyff Shield, Barcelona triumphed in the Supercopa de España, Paris St. Germain claimed the Trophée des Champions, and Inter Milan lifted the Supercoppa Italiana.

PERFORMANCE INDEX RANKING:

Football is both simple and complex, much like many things in nature.
The winners and the best performers are not always synonymous.
Throughout the season, two types of points are accumulated: the “performance index rating” points and the “club excellence rating” points.
The performance index rating points indicate the strength of the clubs, while the excellence rating points also consider successful title runs and achievements.

At the end of the 2022/23 season, Manchester City rose to the top of the pile of 134 teams from Europe’s top 7 leagues. (in alphabetical order: Dutch Eredivisie, English Premier League, French Ligue 1, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A, Portuguese Primeira Liga, and Spanish La Liga)
