About a quarter (1/4) into Serie A

Twelve rounds, 120 out of the 380 matches played,  296 goals,  into the Italian Serie A, we find Juventus sits 9 points and 6 teams away from the predicted 1st place position before the season started. Juventus are finding it difficult to adjust to life without Pirlo, Tevez and Vidal. (Who wouldn’t?) The defending champions are yet to secure a back to back win in Serie A. And though there is a lot remaining of the season, it looks like it won’t be an easy ride up the table.

The return of Roberto Mancini to Inter Milan is proving to be a smart move. Inter Milan sits 2nd on the table with 27 points, equaling the points of Fiorentina (#1 on the table) and sharing the best defensive record with Napoli (4th on the table).

It might be another average season for AC Milan. Finishing in the top 2 must be a goal for the second most successful team in the Champions League.  But at this point, a top 4 finish and a Europa league participation will be enough for most Milan fans.

Twelve matches and no team has managed to avoid a defeat. Three teams have avoided a draw, Fiorentina, Bologna and Lazio.

Bologna also has managed the most defeats. They share this honor with Carpi, who are sitting at the bottom of the table.  Carpi share is tied in points with the only team yet to get a victory, Hellas Verona.

Up in the top 4 of the table is a tight battle that is separated by a win. Two points separate the leaders; Fiorentina from fourth position Napoli.

18 is the magic number. 3 teams have 18 points so far in the season. Juventus, Atalanta and Lazio. Two teams with 27, 14, 13, 12.

Teams with the most points in Serie A

  1.       Fiorentina (27 points)
  2.       Inter Milan (27 points)
  3.       Roma (26 points)
  4.       Napoli (25 points)
  5.       Sassuolo (22 points)

Teams with the least amounts of points

  1.       Carpi (6 points)
  2.       Hellas Verona (6 points)
  3.       Frosinone (11 points)
  4.       Udinese (12 points)
  5.       Bologna (12 points)

Gonzalo Higuain, Lorenzo Insigne, Gervinho, Mohamed Salah, Miralem Pjanic, Carlos Bacca and Paulo Dybala area players that have 5+ goals in the league so far. It’s easy to expect that since they are in teams that occupy the top part of the ‘top 10’ on the table. Despite sitting 10th on the table, Sampdoria has a representative on the list of top scorers with Eder. Eder shares the top goal scorer position with Higuain.

Top goal scorers

  •         Eder (Sampdoria) – 9 goals
  •         Gonzalo Higuain ( Napoli) – 9 goals
  •         Nikola Kalinic (Fiorentina) – 7 goals
  •         Gervinho (Roma) – 6 goals
  •         Lorenzo Insigne (Napoli) – 6 goals
  •         Carlos Bacca (AC Milan)  – 6 goals
  •         Mohamed Salah (Roma) – 5 goals
  •         Miralem Pjanic (Roma) – 5 goals
  •         Paulo Dybala (Juventus) – 5 goals

Biggest win in the league so far was a 5-0 Napoli’s home win over Lazio. This came after 3 winless matches. With that said, that victory came after another 5-0 victory for Napoli in their Europa League match against the Belgian side, Club Brugge.  After losing to Sassuolo in their opening match of the season, Napoli has managed to avoid defeat in all competition up to this point.  They have the longest unbeaten run in the Serie A.

After 12 matches, Nikola Kalinic (Fiorentina) is the only player to score a hat-trick.  Kalinic scored a hat trick against an Inter Milan side that had yet to suffer a Serie A defeat after 5 matches. A 4-1 win ensured the first defeat for Inter Milan and placing Fiorentina at the summit.
