Extra time was required, after a 1-1 draw in regulation time. Fluminense clinched their first-ever Copa Libertadores title, defeating the six-time champions, Boca Juniors.
Luis Advincula equalized for Boca Juniors in the 72nd minute, responding to German Cano’s 36th-minute opener for Fluminense.
Both teams had a player sent off during the first half of extra time.
Two tiles for Flamengo, back-to-back titles for Palmeiras, and now a title for Fluminense. The Copa Libertadores title remains with a Brazilian club for the fifth straight year. The last time a non-Brazilian won the Copa Libertadores was in 2018, when River Plate picked up the title at Boca Juniors expense.
