2019/2 Spanish La Liga – Round 17 – A set-up for the ‘El Clasico’

An exciting El Clasico fixture has been set up on Wednesday (Dec. 18, 2019) after Barcelona and Real Madrid managed to come out with just a point at the end of the round.

After 17 rounds of the La Liga season, Barcelona and Real Madrid have kept it even on points at the top of the league table, and with each side having of the league current top goalscorer with them. Lionel Messi (Barcelona) and Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) have 12 goals each in the league.

Getafe replaces Real Sociedad in the ‘top 4’
Real Sociedad drops to 6th.
Atletico Madrid jumps from 7th to 5th and a point away from the ‘top four
Levante leaps over Real Betis in the standings.
Espanyol, Leganes, Celta Vigo, Mallorca, and Eibar stayed put in the bottom four spots in the league but gained a point each.

The round was kicked off with Leganes managing to come out of Alaves with a ‘1-1’ draw.
Levante gets a road win against Granada when Enis Bardhi scored in the 89th-minute for his side to leave as ‘2-1’ winners.

Barcelona dropped points against Real Sociedad.

Eibar picked up their first point in 5 matches after a goalless match with Athletic Club.

Atletico Madrid defeated Osasuna to get their first league win in four matches.

Getafe’s ‘2-0’ win against Real Valladolid is their 5th straight win in all competitions.

Ante Budimir scored in the 83rd-minute to rescue a point for 10-man Mallorca against Celta Vigo.
It was the first point in 4 matches for Mallorca

Espanyol and Real Betis scored a goal in each half to share the points.
For Espanyol, this is 7 matches without a win. For Real Betis, the result denied them their 4th straight win in the league.

With both Barcelona and Real Madrid failing to win their matches over the round, Sevilla’s defeat at home to Villarreal denied them the chance to move two points away from the top of the league.

Karim Benzema scored in the final seconds of the match to get Real Madrid a point against Valencia at the Mestalla.
