Ernesto Valverde enjoyed a winning return to Athletic Club when his FC Barcelona took all three points and kept their place at the top of the La Liga standings. Lionel Messi added another goal to his tally to contribute to Barcelona’s victory over Athletic Club.
Valencia kept up with the beat and got a victory at Alaves to remain in second place, while Atletico Madrid dropped the ball against Villarreal when Carlos Bacca (Villarreal) found the equalizing goal for his side to get an away point.
The highlight of the round was newly-promoted Girona coming from an early goal down to beat the mighty Real Madrid. This shocking defeats left Madrid 8-points away from the top of the table.
