2017/18 French Ligue 1 – Round 26 – Lyon falls further away from the ‘top 3’ in the league standings

It was a very comfortable round for PSG
Paris Saint-Germain stayed 12-points clear at the top of the league table after coming from a goal down to finish the match a convincing ‘5-2’ victory over Strasbourg; the team that handed PSG their first defeat in a competitive fixture in the 2017/18 season. The result was what Paris Saint-Germain needed after suffering a mid-week defeat in the UEFA Champions League to Real Madrid. Edinson Cavani contributed two late goals to secure PSG’s victory and to send his tally as top goalscorer in the league to 23 goals.

The gap between the rest of the league and top-spot might be too wide to bridge it, but Monaco did their part by taking all three points from Dijon with a victory that was garnished by two late goals.

Lyon couldn’t protect a 2-goal lead for 45-minutes.
A first-half brace from Bertrand Traore wasn’t enough to prevent Lyon from blowing a two-goal lead against a relegation-threatened Lille to remain winless after their dramatic late winner over PSG in the 22nd round.

Caen had to settle for a point after squandering two penalties kicks in their 2-2 draw against Rennes.

Florian Thauvin scored the only goal of the match for Marseille to beat Bordeaux and take full advantage of Lyon’s failure against Lille. Marseille pulled 6-points away from Lyon after winning 6 of their ongoing run of 8-matches undefeated in the league.
