VILLARREAL ARE EUROPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONS AFTER 11-10 PKO WIN.
Villarreal won their first major trophy in their first-ever cup final.
Manchester City dropped into the Europa League Round of 32 after blowing their opportunities to advance from ‘Group H’ of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League. It was quite a comfortable ride from that point onwards. Their most challenging fixture was in the Round of 16 against AC Milan. It was the only game they went into the second-leg without a lead.
On paper, it was against the odds.
With a more expensive squad and a better finish in their domestic league, Manchester United was clearly the favorites to win this tie.
Having Unai Emery as their manager was the main thing Villarreal had in their favor before kick-off. Unai Emery’s record in the competition with Spanish teams has been spotless, and what he had done with the club up till the final made them a bigger threat than what the team would’ve been without him.
Villarreal won the 2021 UEFA Europa League title without suffering a defeat.
They went through the group stage unbeaten, winning 5 of 6 matches while outsourcing opponents by 17 goals to5. The only game they failed to win in the knock-out stage was a goalless draw in the second leg semifinal match vs Arsenal.
It is always fitting when a team that started the competition wins the tournament instead f a team that dropped into the competition in the Round of 32 stages (after failing to advance in the Champions League).
