MARCH 15

Ajax 0-1 Benfica (agg: 2-3).
Manchester United 0-1 Atlético Madrid (agg 1-2)

Atletico Madrid and Benfica win away to go through to the quarterfinals.

Renan Lodi headed in the winning goal at Old Trafford for an Atlético Madrid win at Manchester United’s expense, while Darwin Nunez headed in the winning goal in Amsterdam to get Benfica through at Ajax’s expense.

 

MARCH 16

Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
Juventus 0-3 Villarreal (agg: 1-4)

The away teams advanced with a 4-1 aggregate win.

The goals came in the final quarter of the regulation time for Villarreal to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2009 by beating Juventus {3-0} in Turin. Gerard Moreno opened the scoring when he converted from the penalty spot in the 78th minute. Pau Torres doubled the lead about 7 minutes later from a corner kick before Arnaut Danjuma converted from the penalty spot in the 2nd minute of the final added time.

 

Chelsea continues their title defense season after a win at Lille.

Christian Pulisic scored at the end of the first half to cancel out the lead Burak Yilmaz had given Lille from the penalty spot in the 38th minute. Chelsea entered the second half with their 2-goal advantage intact and went on to score another (through Cesar Azpilicueta) to win the tie by 4 goals to 1.

The last 8 teams left in the 2022 UEFA Champions League are made up of 4 group winners and 4 runners-up.

Runners-up: Benfica, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal
