The opening goal of the 2020 European Championship was an own goal. Merih Demiral’s own goal was also the winning goal for Italy against Turkey in the opening match of the Euro 2020.

After a goalless first-half without a significant event, Merih Dermiral opened the scoring for the game (and tournament) with an own goal to put Turkey a goal down in the 53rd minute. Ciro Immobile doubled the lead before assisting Lorenzo Insigne to score Italy’s third goal of the match.

It was arguably not deserved, but Wales earned themselves a point against Switzerland. The points taken from both teams put Turkey at the bottom of the table in Group A.

Finland’s debut in a major competition ended with a victory against Denmark, the real victory was Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen surviving the medical emergency that occurred during the match.

Belgium wrapped up the opening round of Group B with a 3-0 win against Russia. Romelu Lukaku was on the score sheet on two occasions in that victory.

Austria won their first match in Euro history after beating debutant North Macedonia.
North Macedonia came from a goal down to even the score in the first half, but Austria found the winning goals in the final quarter of the match to get to the three points against North Macedonia.

Netherlands and Ukraine were involved in a 5-goal thriller.
A goal in the 85th minute secured the win for the Netherlands after they blew a two-goal second-half lead within 4 minutes.
After blowing a two-goal lead in about a 4-minute span, a late goal from Denzel Dumfries secured the three points for the Netherlands.

England were narrow winners against Croatia. Raheem Sterling’s 57th-minute goal made the difference. Scotland is next for England (United Kingdom derby).

Czech Republic were 2- 0 winners against Scotland.
Patrick Schick scored a brace to get Czech Republic to a winning start in Group D.

Poland kicked off their tournament with a defeat that included an own goal and a red card against Slovakia.
Spain started their season with a goalless draw with Sweden. Not the start the Spainards were expecting.
Spain and Poland will face each other in the next round for an attempt to get their first win in Group E.

It looked like Hungary was going to keep Portugal out until Raphael Guerreiro scored the winning goal in the 84th minute. Guerreiro’s goal doubled from a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty just three minutes later, before a beautiful passing sequence from the Portuguese attack led to Cristiano’s second goal of the game.

A Mats Hummels’s own goal sunk Germany in their opening game against France.
Germany will need to make amends for the results of their opening day when they meet Portugal in the next round.
