Club Continental Football

The domestic leagues are completed. The Eruopa League and the Champions League make their return.

A week of European Club Continental football competition.

The UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Champion League.

Highly improbable, but should Napoli win the 2019/20 Champions League and Roma win the 2019/20 Europa League, Lazio will miss out on the 2020/21 Champions League and play in the 2020/21 Europa League despite finishing in the top four of the 2019/20 Italian Serie A.

Germany is well represented in the Europa League.

There are three teams from the German Bundesliga. (Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg) and two teams each for the Spanish La Liga (Sevilla and Getafe), Italian Serie A (Inter Milan and Roma), and the English Premier League (Manchester United and Wolves.

Manchester United has the home advantage and a 5-goal lead from the first leg. It will take something very special from LASK to overturn the tie.
Manchester United goes into the second-leg with the biggest lead; and in the best position. Scoring 5 on the road and not conceding has Manchester United going into the second leg with the objective of protecting a 5-away goal lead at Old Trafford.

Basel and Bayern Munich have a 3-goal lead to protect at home. (3 away goals without getting a response in the first leg).

Wolves and Barcelona come home with an away goal from a 1-1 draw in their respective fixtures. Wolves will take on Olympiacos in the Europa League, while Barcelona takes on Napoli. In both cases, the home sides are favorites to win.

Istanbul Basaksehir and Lyon are the teams going into their second leg as away teams with a win from the first leg. They both go into their respective matches with a slender ‘1-0’ win. Istanbul Basaksehir faces Copenhagen and Lyon takes on Juventus. A hard game to call.

Manchester United, Basel, and Bayern Munich are almost a sure bet. We wouldn’t put it past Bayer Leverkusen with the advantage they have. With that said, LASK, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Chelsea have a tall order. We wouldn’t put it past Rangers to make some magic happen.

Shakhtar Donetsk will host Wolfsburg with a 2-1 lead from the first leg.

Rangers visit Leverkusen on the wrong side of a ‘3-1’ score. Difficult to see Rangers advancing, but a 2-0 win will do it.

Basel will be defending a 3-0 lead at home against Eintracht Frankfurt. That is enough goals for any team to defend in a familiar territory.

A goalless draw is fine for Wolves to advance. The objective for Olympiacos at the start of the match is to score a goal; and that won’t change until Wolves has scored two. Olympiacos already took out Arsenal from the competition, will Wolves be their next Premier League victim?

Europa League Round of 16 (first Leg results)
Copenhagen 0-1 İstanbul Başakşehir
Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 Wolfsburg
Manchester United 5-0 LASK
Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 Rangers
Basel 3-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
Wolves 1-1 Olympiacos
Inter Milan vs Getafe – (Suspended)
Sevilla vs Roma – (Suspended)

The suspended matches are going to be played at a neutral venue . One match for the four teams to decide their fate. ‘Inter Milan vs Getafe’  then ‘Sevilla vs Roma’

UEFA Champions League

RB Leipzig, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta and Paris St. Germain are waiting in the quarter final for the four teams that will join them to complete the fixtures.

Which four from the 8 teams left will join them?
Group A – Juventus, Manchester City, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich
Group B – Lyon, Real Madrid, Napoli, and Chelsea

Borussia Dortmund, Valencia, Liverpool and Tottenham are out.
The German Bundesliga and the Spanish La Liga have both lost 1 of 4 representatives, while the English Premier League have lost 2 of the 4 representatives.
The Italian Serie A still has all their dogs in the race.

Bayern Munich can join RB Leipzig.
Real Madrid and Barcelona can join Atletico Madrid
Manchester City and Chelsea are the English teams.
Napoli and Juventus can join Atalanta.
Lyon can join Paris St. Germain – 100% to the quarterfinals for the French teams if that happens.

With Borussia Dortmund eliminated from the tournament, Erlin Braut Haaland won’t be able to challenge Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski for the top scorer’s position.

Leading Goalscorers

Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) – 11 goals
Erlin Braut Haaland (Borussia Dortmund) – 10 goals
Serge Gnabry (Bayern Munich) – 6 goals
Dries Mertens (Napoli) – 6 goals
Harry Kane (Tottenhham) – 6 goals

Champions League Round of 16 (first Leg results)

Juventus 0-1 Lyon
Manchester City 2-1 Real Madrid
Barcelona 1-1 Napoli
Bayern Munich 3-0 Chelsea

Lyon head to Turin with a 1-0 lead. A draw will see them advance. Juventus need to win by a two goal margin to advance.

Manchester City will protect their 2-1 lead against Real Madrid. Real Madrid must win and make up for the two goals they conceded at home in the first leg.

Napoli needs a win or a draw that isn’t goalless at Barcelona to stay in the tie. Can Napoli surprise Camp Nou?

Bayern Munich has to protect a 3-0 lead at home against Chelsea. Something has to go terribly wrong for Bayern to fail in this fixture.
