THE 2024 COPA AMERICA
(June 20, 2024 – July 14, 2024)
The 10 CONMEBOL nations and the best 6 CONCACAF nations will contest for the Copa America title. ๐บ๐ฒ United States as host nation, ๐ฆ๐ท Argentina as the defending champions and the World champions.
It will be a CONMEBOL team against a CONCACAF team in the opening match of the 2024 Copa America, as ๐ฆ๐ท Argentina takes on ๐จ๐ฆ Canada.
For the first time since 1995, ๐ฆ๐ท Argentina will be playing in the Copa America as the defending champion. Another Copa America title will make them the most successful nation in the competition with 16 titles. As things stand, they share the record with Uruguay (15).
Itโs been 15 years since ๐บ๐พ Uruguay won their 15th Copa America title, but their recent performances are showing signs of a team that can end that drought.
Their form might have taken a dip in recent months, but in football, ๐ง๐ท Brazil will always remain a tournament favorite. Brazil has 9 Copa America titles and would love to join Argentina and Uruguay in the double-digits.
๐จ๐ฑ Chile was the last defending champion to retain the title, beating Argentina on both occasions through penalty shootouts after playing out a goalless draw: the 2015 Copa America and the 2016 Copa America Centenario.
๐ฒ๐ฝ Mexico remains the only team not from CONMEBOL to reach a Copa America final. They did so in 2001, when they lost 1-0 against Colombia in the final. It remains ๐จ๐ด Colombiaโs only title success in the Copa America. Performances over the past couple of years have lowered expectations for this Mexican team, but that could be the best scenario for them to surprise.
๐บ๐ฒ United States finished in the semifinals when they hosted the tournament in 2016, losing 4-0 to Argentina. We wait to see how far they go in this edition.
