French Ligue1

The 2021/22 French Ligue 1 – Can Lille defend the title or is Paris St. Germain too strong to be denied a league title for consecutive seasons?

LIGUE 1
PSG is the only side that can’t be a surprise winner in Ligue 1.

Lille won the league by a point. They won the league by suffering the fewest number of defeats, not because of having the most wins (that was PSG).

Beating Paris St. Germain by a point in the French Ligue 1 is a massive thing to do in recent years. The question now is can Lille do the highly improbable task of defending the league title? The simple answer is ‘No’!

Lille surprised us all when they finished the 2020-21 season as the French Ligue champions and Paris St. Germain are doing whatever it takes to get back their crown in the French Ligue 1.

The transfer deals that Paris St. Germain has worked on, and the ones rumored to be in the pipelines will make it almost impossible for the competition to dream of an upset. Football is not played on paper but if it was, the French Ligue 1 will be handed to Paris St. Germain before August.

Q: What can Lille do to keep their crown?
Answer: Avoid defeats and hope Paris St. Germain stumbles. Basically, the same as last season.

It will be a bigger headline than what we had last year if Lille manages to defend their league title.
Lille exceeded expectations last season, so they’ve bought themselves the luxury of not winning the league title and still have a considerably successful season if they qualify for another Champions League football.

Even though PSG is looking ambitious for the season, teams like Monaco, Lyon, and Marseille should find inspiration from what Lille did last season and make this season a competitive one for the Parisians.

Reims, Strasbourg, Lorient, Brest, and Nantes will need a better season than the risky one they had.

Monaco should aim to do better than the third-place finish, while Lyon should be aiming to do better than the 4th place finish. Pre-season expectation tipped Lyon to finish in a better position than eventual league winners but they found a way to string out poor results to hit below the mark.

As for Marseille, they owe it to their history to have a good season.

Failing to win the title means that Paris St. Germain remained a league title away from equalling the league record.
Saint-Etienne holds the record for most French Ligue 1 titles with 10 to their name but the last time Saint-Etienne won a league title was in 1981. For forty years, no team in France has trumped this record. Monaco and Lille have denied PSG the opportunity to do so in the last decade.

Marseille and Paris St. Germain have 9 titles each.
Even though they are on 9 There is a decade between the last time Marseille won the league title and the last time Paris St. Germain won it. .
Marseille’s most recent league title was in 2010
Paris St. Germain’s most recent title was in 2020

It’s unlikely but Monaco has what it takes to secure a 9th league title. Monaco was the champions in 2017. Monaco and Nantes have 8 league titles each.
Nantes involvement in the 2021-22 season is the result of surviving the relegation playoff games against Toulouse. We don’t expect Nantes to contest for a title anytime soon. Their last league title was in 2001.

Can Troyes and Clermont stay up?
THE NEWCOMERS

Troyes were promoted to Ligue 1 as champions of Ligue 2. Clermont was the runner-up. Toulouse finished third and failed to get promoted after losing the play-off matches against Nantes.
Toulouse lost ‘2-2’ on aggregate after only managing to get a 1- 0 win away against Nantes when the first leg ended in a 2- 1 home defeat.

After surviving the relegation play-offs, Nantes wouldn’t want this season to end as the last one did. It won’t be an easy start for Nantes as they travel to face Monaco for the opening match of the 2021/22 French Ligue 1.

There are many questions that will be answered over the next 38 rounds.
There is some positive Lille can take for their win against Paris St. Germain in the French Super Cup but the question still remains, will Lille do the improbable and defend the title against a Paris St. Germain side that is building a team to challenge the best of Europe?

Lille will kick off their title defense season against Metz, while a comfortable win will be expected from Paris St. Germain from their game away against newly-promoted Troyes.

How will Lyon cope after the transfer of Memphis Depay?
