The 2018/19 UEFA Champions League – Round Three – Dortmund, Barcelona, and Juventus are perfect at the mid-point of the group stage

October 23, 2018

AEK Athens 0-2 Bayern Munich (Group E)

Bayern Munich – Javier Martinez 61’ Robert Lewandowski 63’

Ajax 1-0 Benfica (Group E)

Ajax – Noussair Mazraoui 90+3’

Bayern Munich back to winning ways after getting goals in quick succession to do the expected and beat AEK Athens.

A late injury-time winning goal sealed a dramatic win over Benfica for Ajax to keep their place at the top of Group E.

Hoffenheim 3-3 Lyon (Group F)

Hoffenheim – Andrej Kramaric 33’ 47’ Joelinton 90’+2’

Lyon – Bertrand Traore 27’ Tanguy Ndombele Alvaro 59’ Memphis Depay 67’

Shakhtar Donetsk 0-3 Manchester City(Group F)

Manchester City – David Silva 30’ Aymeric Laporte 35’ Bernardo Silva 71’

In a 6-goal thrilling match, Hoffenheim and Lyon shared the points after both teams experienced having to come from behind to lead by a goal, and losing the lead.

Manchester City established their place at the top of the group after a 3-0 in Ukraine against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Real Madrid 2-1 Viktoria Plzen (Group G)

Real Madrid – Karim Benzema 11’ Marcelo 56’

Viktoria Plzen – Patrik Hrosovsky 79’

Roma 3-0 CSKA Moscow (Group G)

Roma -Edin Dzeko 30’ 43’ Cengiz Under 50’

Opening day defeat in the group hasn’t kept Roma from getting the results to rise to the top of Group G. A 3-0 home win against CSKA Moscow gave Roma the ‘goal difference’ to keep Real Madrid from the top of the group despite Madrid finding their needed victory against a Viktoria Plzen side that is dropping further away from the contest.

Manchester United 0-1 Juventus (Group H)

Juventus – Paulo Dybala 17’

Young Boys 1-1 Valencia (Group H)

Young Boys – Guillaume Hoarau 55’

Valencia – Michy Batshuayi 26’

Paulo Dybala scored the only goal of the match to give Juventus a perfect start in their campaign and a victory at Old Trafford against a Manchester United side that was showing signs of how much they’ve fallen away from their place as one of the ‘giants’ in European football.

A Valencia victory against Young Boys would have allowed them to take advantage of the results at Old Trafford and make the climb to second-place in the group. Valencia gets a point in Switzerland against Young Boys.

October 24, 2018

Club Brugge 1-1 Monaco (Group A)

Club Brugge -Wesley 39’

Monaco – Moussa Sylla 31

Borussia Dortmund 4-0 Atletico Madrid (Group A)

Borussia Dortmund – Axel Witsel 38’ Raphael Guerreiro 73’ 89’ Jadon Sancho 83’

Monaco winless run continues after a point against Club Brugge. It was the best opportunity in the group for both Club Brugge and Monaco to pick up a win but both teams ended up with their first point of the competition after a first-half goal for each side decided the result.

Borussia Dortmund has now scored 8 goals in their opening three matches in Group A without conceding any. Dortmund doubled their goal scored after ‘banging’ in 4 goals past Atletico Madrid to separate themselves in points accumulated while they remain top of the group.

PSV Eindhoven 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur (Group B)

PSV Eindhoven – Hirving Lozano 30’ Luuk de Jong 87’

Tottenham Hotspur – Lucas Moura 39’ Harry Kane 55

Barcelona 2-0 Inter Milan (Group B)

Barcelona – Rafinha 32 Jordi Alba 83’

They had to do it without Lionel Messi but Barcelona gets a perfect start and a three-point lead in Group B after a dominant display at the Camp Nou to seal a ‘2-0’ win against Inter Milan.

PSV Eindhoven and Tottenham Hotspur ended their run of defeats in the group by sharing a point after a 2-all draw. Tottenham did their best to protect their second-half lead with a 10-man team after the sending off of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, but Luuk de Jong flicked the ball into the next from a set-piece attempt to get PSV a point. On the balance of play, Tottenham might fell they deserved more from the match than a point.

Liverpool 4-0 Red Star Belgrade (Group C)

Liverpool – Roberto Firmino 20’ Mohamed Salah 45’ 51’(pen) Sadio Mane 80’

Paris St. Germain 2-2 Napoli (Group C)

Paris St. Germain – Mario Rui 61’(o.g) Angel Di Maria 90+3’

Napoli – Lorenzo Insigne 29’ Dries Mertens 77

Mid-way through a group that has been considered to be one of the ‘group of death’, Liverpool established their place at the top of Group C after an expected home victory against Red Star Belgrade.  All three of Liverpool’s attacking prongs were on the scoresheet, with Mohamed Salah scoring a brace.

Angel Di Maria’s injury-time goal saved Paris St. Germain from a humiliating defeat at home while denying Napoli an opportunity to top Group C.

Group C is very open.

Galatasaray 0-0 Schalke 04 (Group D)

Lokomotiv Moscow 1-3 Porto (Group D)

Lokomotiv Moscow – Anton Miranchhuk 38’

Porto – Moussa Marega 26’(pen) Hector Herrera 35’ Jesus Corona 47’

Their form in their domestic leagues made important for Schalke to get something from this match.  A goalless draw between Galatasaray and Schalke 04 was the opportunity Porto needed to climb to the top of the group through victory in Russia against Lokomotiv Moscow.
