A draw in the 2016/17 La Liga  opening match. Malaga welcomed Osasuna in a 1-1 draw. The home team was first to get on the scoresheet. Juanpi;s 56th-minute goal gave Malaga a lead that lasted for almost thirty minutes. Osasuna’s Fran Merida equalizer in the 85th minute was the final goal of the match. As much as it was a season opener, this wasn’t the most highly anticipated goal delivering match in the planner of most La Liga fans.

 

Deportivo La Coruna         2-1     Eibar

592246532Deportivo La Coruna grabbed the first win of the 2016/17 La Liga season after having to come from a goal down to beat Eibar.

All goals were scored in the second half. Ivan Ramis 55th minute goal gave Eibar a lead that lasted for just about 15 minutes. Pedro Mosquera leveled it in the 69th minute for the home team, before Lucas Perez winner in 87th minute.

It was magic at the Camp Nou.

The defending champions are still in the mood for another title. In their opening match of the season, FC Barcelona made sure no questions were asked about their interest in defending their title in the 2016/17 La Liga season.

Arda Turan started the scoring for Barcelona in the 6th minute. Real Betis responded well by getting an equalizer in the 21st minute, courtesy of Ruben Castro’s goal.  But with about 70 minutes of game time left to be played, FC Barcelona was not going to be stopped in front of their home crowd.

 

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi restored the lead in the 37th minute, and Luis Suarez gave the team an insurance goal in the 42nd minute. FC Barcelona went into the break with a 3-1 lead and picked up where they had left off at the start of the second half.

Luis Suarez got their fourth goal, and Lionel Messi got the sixth. Suarez eventually got his hattrick and Barcelona’s final goal of the match in the 82nd minute, before Real Betis got a consolation goal from Ruben Castro to cut the Barcelona’s lead down to 4.

 

Granada             1-1     Villarreal

Villarreal couldn’t hold on to their lead, and Granada couldn’t make home advantage count. The match ended in a 1-1 draw

It was a goal fest when Sevilla faced Espanyol in their 2016/17 La Liga season opener. It was the worst of defending or the best of attacking. Sevilla took all three point in their opening match of the season in a ten-goal thriller against Espanyol. Six goals were scored before the end of the first half

Espanyol took the lead in the 8th minute from Pablo Piatti’s goal. Sevilla’s Pablo Sarabia and Luciano Vietto brought the team from a goal down to a goal up by the 22nd minute. Espanyol copied that move and before the end of the first half, Hernan Perez and Victor Mata had taken Espanyol from a goal down to a goal up.

At halftime, the scoreboard read Sevilla 3-3 Espanyol, after Luciano Vietto got his second goal of the match to even things up for the start of the second half.

 

The difference between the first half and the second half was that Sevilla scored most of the goals. It took about ten minutes into the second half for the goal scoring to resume. Franco Vazquez gave Sevilla the lead for the second time in the match in the 54th minute before Wissam Ben Yedder doubled the lead for them in the 66th minute. Hiroshi Kiyotake 74th minute goal stretched the lead to three goals, pulling the game away from Espanyol.  Gerard Moreno gave some hope to Espanyol in the 80th minute when he scored the fourth goal for the away team. Moreno’s goal was the tenth and last goal of the match.

 

Whether you were on the winning side/ losing side or a neutral, this was a match that gave it all to football.

Sporting Gijon               2-1             Athletic Club

593235884A home victory was the start to Sporting Gijon’s season. Two second-half goals coming from Duje Cop 51 and Victor Romero Rodriguez 54’.  Isma Lopez could have extended the lead to three if he hadn’t missed his penalty in the 61st minute.

Borja Viguera made it interesting with a late goal for Athletic Club in the 86th minute, but that was it for the goals in the match.

 

Real Sociedad         0-3     Real Madrid

As a major title contender, Real Madrid did not disappoint in their season opener. Gareth Bale scored two goals as Madrid grabbed an expected win from Real Sociedad to kickstart their season with a win and three points.

Gareth Bale got Madrid’s first goal for them in their first attempt at an attack. It was a comfortable match for Madrid, as they went to the half at 2-0 up.

 

Atletico Madrid     1-1         Alaves

Kevin Gameiro (90’+3)        Manu Garcia (90’+5)

 

Failing to fing a home win against Alaves is not a good sign for Atletic Madird and their fans. If Atletico Madrid has a shot of going toe-to-toe with Barcelona and Real Madrid, falling behind this early is not what Diego Simeone and his men would want to be doing. 593257668

Newly promoted Deportivo Alaves were able to deny title contender Atletico Madrid from a win in a very late showdown.  After a full match with no goals, both teams scored in injury time to take a point each.593253712

Kevin Gameiro’s first goal for his new club was looking to be the winner. Gameiro scored a late penalty, three minutes into injury time.  Alaves had not been a threat in the match, but Manu Garcia incredible strike just two minutes after his team going down a goal was all it took to paste smiles across the faces of the home crowd.

Celta Vigo 0-1 Leganes

Newly promoted Leganes finished with a man down, but a goal up. It was a huge win for Leganes over Celta Vigo in their opening match of the season.

 

Valencia 2-4 Las Palmas

Another newly promoted team had a winning day playing away from home. Valencia’s troubles from last season look to have spilled into this new one.

 

Santi Mina gave Valencia a perfect start with a goal in the 6th minute. Las Palmas turned things around by the 31st minute to be in a winning position with a 2 goal lead.

 

Santi Mina’s second goals in the 31st minute cut the lead in half, but Marko Livaja doubled his goals and restored Las Palmas goal gap in the 88th minute to finish the match with a 4-2 win.
