Diego Perotti 65’(pen), 76’(pen)

Edin Dzeko 83’

The opening match for the 2016/17 Italian Serie A was a stamp from Roma to remind Serie A fans that they Rome could be the resting place for the Scudetto at the end of the season.

Roma finished third in the 2015/16 Serie A season final standings, while Udinese barely maintained their status as a top-flight team in Italy by finishing as the last surviving member to avoid relegation. With that record, Roma was the favorite to win this match. And playing in front of their home fans even made them bigger favorites.

It took until the 65th minute for the first goal to be scored. Roma had been dominating the match, but scoring a goal was looking difficult. Diego Perotti scored the first two goals for Roma from the spot. Perotti converted penalty kicks into goals in the 65th and 76th minute to calm the nerves of Roma and their fans.

Edin Dzeko made it a 3-0 scoreline in the 83rd minute, and Mohamed Salah pushed it to 4-0 a minute later.

Juventus              2-1      Fiorentina

Sami Khedira 37’              Nikola Kalinic 70’

Gonzalo Higuain 75’

Despite being the most dominant team in the league, Juventus at home adds an extra layer of dominance to the team. It takes a lot of determination, skill, and luck to get a win from Juventus at home. Unluckily for Fiorentina, they didn’t have all that to take a win from Juve.

The Serie A defending champions, Juventus began their league title defense with a win over another title contender, Fiorentina. In his first league match for Juventus, Gonzalo Higuain scored the winning goal to give his new team a winning start.

Fiorentina finished 5th last season, and would be looking to make this year a year they get a UEFA Champions League qualification spot. Nikola Kalinic found a leveler for Fiorentina in the 70th minute after Sami Khedira’s first half header has given Juventus the lead.  But just five minutes after leveling the score, Gonzalo Higuain found the winner to write the headlines.

A late charge from Torino made things interesting when second-half substitute Daniele Baselli cut down Milan’s lead to a goal just a minute into injury time. Things got more interesting when Milan’s Gabriel Paletta gave away a penalty deep into injury time. Paletta was sent off for a second yellow card, but Andrea Belotti’s penalty was saved by Donnarumma to deny Torino a point.

Bologna         1-0     Crotone

Mattia Destro 86’

Mattia Destro’s 86th-minute goal decided the match that gave Bologna a winning start to their season over newly promoted Crotone.

Chievo Verona 2-0 Inter Milan.593250620

Maybe the late switch in managers before the start of the season had something to do with Inter Milan’s loss in their season opener against Chievo Verona. It definitely wasn’t the start Inter was expecting. After the preseason investments and signings, Inter was looking to make progress on their 4th place finish from last season.

Valter Birsa scored two goals(41’,81’) in the second half to give Chievo the win.

Empoli 0-1 Sampdoria

                   Luis Muriel 37’

All second half action saw Genoa grab all three points at home to start their season with 3 points. Cagliari was first to get on the scoresheet when Marco Borriello gave the visitors the lead in the 66th minute.            Domenico Berardi 31’(pen)

The away team took all three points when Domenico Berardi’s 31st-minute penalty goal for Sassuolo decided the match.593240206

Palermo’s Slobodan RajKovic first half yellow card came back to bite him late in the match as he was sent off in injury time for a second yellow card.

Pescara         2-2     Napoli

Ahmad Benali 8’        Dries Mertens 60’ 63’

Gianluca Caprari 35’

593246764

Napoli is missing Gonzalo Higuain already.

Dries Mertens was the hero for Napoli, as his two second-half goals helped the teams to  avoid an early disgrace. Napoli came from two goals down and secure a point in their opening match of the 2016/17 Serie A season.

Ahmed Benali 8’ and Gianluca Caprari 35’ had taken newly promoted Pescara to a winning position at the half.

If Napoli has any hope of contending for the league title, these are the games they should be putting away.

Atalanta                   3-4                                 Lazio

Franck Yannick Kessie 63’, 67’           Ciro Immobile 15’

Andrea Petagna 90’+1              Wesley Hoedt 20’

 Cristiano Lombardi 33’

 Danilo Cataldi 89’

It was a great start to the match as Lazio were 3 goals up at the end of the first half in a seven-goal thriller against Atalanta. Ciro Immobile 15’ Wesley Hoedt 20’ and Cristiano Lombardi 33’ gave a comfortable lead to the team.

593240386

Two second-half goals from Franck Yannick Kessie (63rd and 67th minute) made the match interesting for the neutrals and Lazio fans. Andrea Petagna found the third goal for Atalanta about a minute into injury time, but it was after Danilo Cataldi had doubled the lead for Lazio in the 89th minute.
