Newly promoted side Hull City opened the 2016/17 Barclays Premier League season with a win over the defending champions, Leicester City. Nothing about their status ahead of the match would have predicted the outcome. The only advantage Hull had was that they were playing in front of their home crowd, but that means nothing to the Leicester City we knew from last season.  Leicester City is in need of points to start their attempt to securing their title.

While one newly promoted team opened their campaign with a win in front of home fans, another lost in front of their home fans. Burnley lost 1-0 to Swansea City. It was a goalless match an 82nd-minute goal Leroy Fer decided the match. It wasn’t a shocking result, considering that in the previous season Swansea City was just two positions away from finishing in the top half of the table.

In the 2015/16 season, West Bromwich Albion finished a place above Crystal Palace (14th and 15th). West Brom also finished the season with a point more (43 to 42). And in their season opener for the 2016/17 season, it was just a goal that separated them. West Brom finished the match with a goal over Crystal Palace. A great away win for West Brom and a poor home start for Palace.

Everton 1-1 Tottenham Hotspurs: An early goal from Ross Barkley gave Everton a dream start to their campaign. But Tottenham didn’t allow Everton to steal the victory. After a great run last season, an opening day defeat might be a morale killer for a team with title dreams like Tottenham. Erik Lamela equalized in the second half (59’) ended the scoring for the match.

Stoke couldn’t get a win against newly promoted Middlesbrough. The match finished in a 1-1 draw. Álvaro Negredo gave Middlesborough the lead in just 11 minutes. Xherdan Shaqiri equalized in the 67th minute, courtesy of a free kick. Playing at home and an early goal placed Middlesbrough in a healthy situation to walk away from their opening match with a point.

Paddy McNair’s own goal in the 87th was the decider. It was the perfect start for City. Early penalty awarded after Raheem Sterling was brought down in the penalty box allowed for Sergio Aguero to convert the spot kick to a goal in the 4th minute. Jermain Defoe equalizing goal in the 71st minute brought Sunderland came back into the match.
