Chelsea 2-1 West Ham United

Day 2 of the 2016/17 Premier League season had two heavyweights facing each other, and a test for a team that has gone through major remodeling over the summer.

Pep Guardiola started his season with a win the day before., so the football world was waiting to see how Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp, and Arsene Wenger would start their season.

AFC Bournemouth welcomed Manchester United to the Vitality Stadium. It was a stadium United were beaten last in their last season league match against Bournemouth.

The second half of the match was more of an open match. Bournemouth push for an equalizer opened up the game to allow for a better flow in attack for both teams. At the end, the quality on Manchester United side showed on the scoreboard.

Rooney doubled the lead for Manchester United in the 59th minute, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic tripled it in the 64th minute. Scoring in his league debut meant that Ibrahimovic had scored in his league debut in the Serie A. La Liga, French Ligue 1, and not the Premier League.

Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool

Liverpool travels back home from London with 3 points from their season opener against Arsenal. It was a 7 goal thriller that described what the Premier League is all about.

Arsenal started strongly and was looking to make home advantage count. Less than a minute after missing a penalty, Theo Walcott made amends by opening the scoring and giving Arsenal the lead in the 31st minute.

Philippe Coutinho converted a free kick at the end of the first half into a goal. It is too early to call that goal of the season, but we can be confident to call it the goal of the week.

Three goals from Liverpool within the first 20 minutes of the second half started emptying the stadium of Arsenal supporters. Adam Lallana doubled the score for Liverpool in the 49th minute, Coutinho doubled the lead in the 56th and Sadio Mane extended the lead to three goals in the 63rd minute.

Mane’s goal got a quick response from Arsenal when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored a minute after to make it a 4-2 scoreline. Oxlade-Chamberlain had only been on the field for about 5 minutes when he got his goal in the 64th minute.

Liverpool had gone from a 4-1 lead to a 4-3 lead, a perfect setting for a comeback for Arsenal in their opening match in front of home support. It was a comeback that never happened. The match ended 4-3 win to Liverpool.

Both teams would be leaving the match with questions to answer and some level of comfort. Liverpool’s attacking display should comfort them, but giving up a massive lead would be something they would need to work on for future matches.
Arsenal had key players missing from their lineup, and to be able to cut the lead down to a goal is a sign of a team that can fight for a win. But there is still questions about the quality and depth of players they have on their team. Are they strong enough to remain competitive in their upcoming matches and competitions?

Chelsea 2-1 West Ham United

A late goal from Diego Costa in the 89th minute gave Chelsea the maximum points in their opening match of the 2016/17 Barclays Premier League.589922444

After a disastrous start in the previous season, Chelsea was looking forward not to repeat their errors. A season that saw them barely making it into the top half of the final league standings. With a new manager and some new signings, Chelsea took the stage at their home grounds of Stamford Bridge to show what they’ve been working on over the summer.

Chelsea’s opposition was a local rival, West Ham United. West Ham is a team with growing ambitions. This season’s goal for West Ham will be finishing better than their 7th place finish last season.

After a goalless first half, Eden Hazard opened scoring just three minutes after the restart from the spot. West Ham’s Michail Antonio brought down Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta in the penalty box. It was a tackle from behind and was with very little doubt a foul.

Chelsea was having a pretty comfortable game until James Collins scored an equalizer in the 77th minute. With just little of 10 minutes of regular time to be played, Antonio Conte was looking to be denied a win in his first competitive match with Chelsea.589922832

It wasn’t the clearest of chances, but Diego Costa’s striking abilities allowed for the winning goal in the 89th minute. A low shot to the bottom right corner was too far away from West Ham’s Adrian to reach.

Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp and Antonio Conte have all started their season with a win. The race remains tight for these new managers.

After the first round of the 2016/17 Barclays Premier League, Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho is the closest player to the golden boot with 2 goals to his name and Ben Foster (West Bromwich Albion) and Lukas Fabianski (Swansea City) are tied for the golden glove
