Matches

One the menu for this week. (Final Lap for the 2016/17 Italian Serie A)

There is absolutely no good excuse to miss out on these matches. Cancel plans (if you have any) and don’t be the odd one. You are better than that.

This Weekend’s Top Fixtures.

Closing day for the 2016/17 Italian Serie A is bigger for some teams than for others.  There is not title to be fought for, but there is still some fighting left to be done to complete the final set of the league standings.

Roma and Napoli racing for 2nd place.

Both teams have had success against the other in when playing away from home. Roma’s defeat in the ‘Derby della Capitale’ to Lazio has robbed them of a chance of a comfortable finish in second place and direct qualification to the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League group stage. Only a home victory over Genoa in their final match of the season will guarantee that Roma finishes as the second best team in the 2016/17 Serie A season.

Napoli is undefeated in 11 consecutive league matches and gunning for a 5 consecutive victory when they go against Sampdoria in their final away match of the season. A victory for Napoli will still require Roma’s inability to get the maximum points against Genoa to get a second-place finish.

The pressure will be on both teams as they will be going against teams that have nothing left to play for in the season.

The good news for both of these teams is that regardless of where they end up finishing at the end of the day, there is more than enough talent on each side to see them make it to the group stages of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League competition, but a shorter journey to the competition is always preferred.

Who is going to finish as the season’s top goal scorer?

We don’t believe the strikers on both teams will need any more incentive to find the net as much as possible on the last day of the season, but in the battle for second place is also the fight for who is going to finish as the league top scorer. Roma’s Edin Dzeko is leading the goal scoring chart with 28 goals, while Napoli’s Dries Mertens is just a goal behind.

Also in contention for the golden boot is Andrea Belotti(Torino)-25 goals, Gonzalo Higuain(Juventus)-24 goals, and Mauro Icardi(Inter Milan)-24 goals.

Crotone’s fight to remain in Serie A

A home victory against Lazio in conjunction with Empoli’s failure to secure the maximum points against a relegated Palermo side is the only way Crotone can continue their participation in the Italian Serie A for at least another season.

From where we are sitting, these are very slim odds. But futbol has shocks us when we least expect it.
