Newcomers Albania loses to Switzerland.

Albania 0 – Switzerland 1 Group A
Stade Bollaert-Delelis, Lens

It was Albania’s first ever European Championship match, and according to the rankings they were the underdog.

Albania was a man down in the 36th minute after Lorik Cana took two yellow cards in 13 minutes. First was the 23rd minute, and the second on the 36th.

An early goal in the 5th minute was enough to give Switzerland 3 points. Fabian Schar headed in a corner kick to score the only goal of the match.

Being numerically disadvantaged did not stop Albania from holding their own against Switzerland. They were able to create enough chances to get an equalizing goal. With 11 men on the field, they might have had better opportunities.

Switzerland got the win they needed. It wasn’t a convincing win, but it is a points game and points count at the end. Playing against a newbie in the competition with an extra man on the field should have lead to a more convincing win than what Switzerland was able to give us.

Albania plays Romania in the next Group A match. Both teams will be fighting for their first point(s). Albania will still be searching for their first goal in the European Championship. A win in this match will place the team back in contention for Round of 16 qualifications. Whoever wins will be hoping for a draw game in the match between Switzerland and France

Switzerland will be facing the host nation, France. Since they both have 3 points to their name in Group A, a win will send them into the Round of 16. A draw will make things very interesting for the final group matches.

This is how Group A in France Euro 2016 looks.
