MGSV Netherlands World Cup Overview

Netherlands (Oranje) in Brazil……..

They were a win away from making their qualification into the World Cup flawless. With a 9-1-0 (W-D-L) record, they enter the competition again with the same level of expectation they’ve carried for majority of the World Cup history.

Arguably one of the most unlucky teams in the history of the Fifa World Cup competition. The Dutch have been the bridesmaid on too many occasions, that the fact that they are still not a bride is hard to explain.

On three occasions they have come out of the competition as runners-up. In 1974, 1978, and the most recent in 2010.

The Netherlands have always entered any futbol competition as a major threat, and have carried the tag of being one of the favorites to win.  In 2012, they entered the UEFA European Championship as one of the three favorite teams to win. It was a big disappointment for the Oranje.

After being unable to secure a single win, they were knocked out of the competition at last place in their group. This would be something they will be looking forward to amend in the World Cup.

The Venom

They are known for their high offensive work rate and they’ve produced exceptional talents to do so. Take a look at Robin Van Persie. This Manchester United player is the record top scorer, with 41 goals for Netherlands. And there is still more goals in this fella. In the English Premier League, he sits with Alan Shearer as the only two to have won the golden boot consecutively with two different clubs.

Keep an eye out for the hard working forward veteran, Dirk Kuyt. Kuyt has shown over the years his dedication to a match, when he is on the pitch.

In addition to this, there is Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (PSV) and the ex PSV manJeremain Lens who is now playing with FC Dynamo Kyiv

The Control and Support

In the midfield is a supporting striker who goes by the name of Arjen Robben (the flying Dutchman). He has spent majority of his career playing for top class club teams, Chelsea, Real Madrid and currently in the squad of the ‘in-form’ Bayern Munich.

Robben on the flanks, has an edge over defenders with his sudden dash tremendous speed on the ball. His style of attack is predictable, but his pace always gives him the advantage. Somewhere in transit, he will cut to his left and strike a powerful shot at the goal.

Another big name is Wesley Sneijder. This Galatasaray player will be bringing his talent of good control and decision making in the midfield area that will be the starting point of the Dutch attack.

Other key midfield players will be Rafael van der Vaart (Hamburg), Nigel de Jong (AC Milan), Stijn Schaars (PSV), Kevin Strootman (Roma) and the Canadian born, Jonathan de Guzmán (Villareal)

The Bouncers

Defense might be the reason for their bad luck in international competitions. They are still in search of a solution to counter attacks.

A defenders to look for will be the Paris St. Germain (PSG) man, Gregory van der Wiel. He enjoys going forward to help with attack, but does his duty as a defender quite well.

Coming from the British Premier League will be Ron Vlaar who plays for Aston Villa and John Heitinga, ex-Everton player who is now with the Fulham.

There is also Bruno Martins Indi and his Fenyenord teammate, Daryl Janmaat.

So what are the odds here for the Dutch?

With the flop in Euro 2012 and being in the same group as Spain, it is safe to say that this team should be aiming at coming in 2nd in their group to clinch the Round of 16.

But why be safe? They have the arsenal to top their group.

The stakes might not be the same this time around, but meeting Spain in their first group game will give them a chance to revenge their loss in the last Fifa World Cup final.

Their meeting with Australia should be an easier game for the Dutch. But Chile might require the effort it will take to take-on Spain and not lose.

Expectations might dropped a little for Netherlands, but luck might be on their side this time around.

But hey!, there will be some drama, suspense and surprises. And that is why we will have to be watching to see if Netherlands will make home field advantage count.
