Four clubs are going for two spots (preferably one spot). There is the direct promotions spot to tier 1 of German football that is currently occupied by Werder Bremen, and the promotion play-off qualifying spot occupied by Hamburger SV.
Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV, and Darmstadt sit on 57 points each, with St. Pauli on 54 points.
There is a 20-point gap between the two.
Werder Bremen will have the backing of home support when they take on Jahn Regensburg (13th) for the points to keep 2nd place and direct promotion. Any result by a defeat will do for Werder Bremen.
Should the expected happen in Werder Bremen’s fixture, Hamburger, Darmstadt, and St. Pauli will have the promotion play-off spot to chase on the day.
St. Pauli is mathematically in the contest but the probability of their promotion is negligible with 3 points behind and not having the goal difference in their favor.
Hamburger SV can’t afford any result from their fixture if it does not match the outcome of the result from Darmstadt’s fixture.
Should the unexpected happen and Werder Bremen is beaten at home, Hamburg SV or Darmstadt can use a win to take away direct promotion.
