Houston, TX Group C
México 1 – 1 Venezuela
The two undefeated teams in Group C of the Copa America Centenario faced each other in the final group match. The advancement to the knockout stage had already been clinched, and this was a match to decide who was going to win the group.
A positive goal difference made Mexico the Group leaders, and a win for Venezuela would have changed that.
Match ended in a draw, as both teams kept their undefeated run in the competition.
Venezuela was first to get on the scoreboard. Jose Velazquez gave Venezuela the lead in the 10th minute. A free kick whipped into the Mexican penalty box was headed to Velazquez. He did the right thing a scissor-kicked the ball into the net.
Just when it looked like Mexico was about to lose their impressive undefeated run, Jesus Corona took matters into his hands a scored a solo goal. It was a goal that had ‘Lionel Messi’ written all over it. It was the first goal Venezuela had conceded in the competition.
Very hard-fought game. Our competitive team spirit continues intact. Now to the quarterfinals!???? #VamosVinotinto pic.twitter.com/X4IJcZDr4x
