CUP FUTBOL

League football in England, Portugal, and the Netherlands; cup and league football in Spain; and cup competitions in Italy and Germany.

There is a game in the Dutch Eredivisie and another in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
There is a full round of fixtures in the English Premier League.
In Spain, there are league and cup matches, including two La Liga games and the second round of the Copa del Rey.
There is cup football in Germany and Italy as well, with the Round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal and the half of the Round of 16 of the Coppa Italia.

Barcelona and Manchester City are in desperate need of league victories to halt their poor runs of form.
Barcelona’s lead at the top of the La Liga standings has mathematically vanished following their defeat to Las Palmas over the weekend, while Manchester City has lost their last five league games, pushing them out of the top four in the Premier League.
Barcelona will travel to Mallorca on Tuesday in search of three vital points.
Manchester City will host Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, with only a point separating the two teams in the standings.

Real Madrid, with a game in hand and just a point off the top of the La Liga table, will aim for an away victory against Athletic Club to maximize the value of their game in hand.
Liverpool holds a nine-point lead in the Premier League and will look to maintain it with a win away at Newcastle United.
Arsenal and Chelsea are the teams closest to Liverpool in the title race after 13 rounds. Chelsea will face a favorable matchup away against bottom-placed Southampton, while Arsenal will host a resurgent Manchester United side aiming to regain their form. Arsenal versus Manchester United remains a classic fixture.

Ajax and Utrecht will play their Eredivisie game in hand, with Ajax a point and one position ahead of third-placed Utrecht. Both teams will aim for a win to close the gap on PSV Eindhoven at the top of the standings.
After suffering their first loss of the Primeira Liga season on Saturday, Sporting CP will look to bounce back on Thursday when they face Moreirense.

The Cup football

Half of the Coppa Italia Round of 16 fixtures will take place this week, with the remaining four scheduled for next week. The standout clash is Lazio vs. Napoli on Thursday. AC Milan will face recently relegated Sassuolo, while Bologna hosts Monza and Fiorentina welcomes Empoli. Aside from Sassuolo, all the teams competing this week are from Serie A.

The marquee fixture in the DFB-Pokal Round of 16 is Bayern Munich, the most successful club in German football history, hosting Bayer Leverkusen, the current holders of the trophy. This high-stakes clash opens the round, while RB Leipzig’s home tie against Eintracht Frankfurt headlines day two. Wolfsburg vs. Hoffenheim marks another encounter between Bundesliga sides. Meanwhile, Augsburg, Freiburg, Stuttgart, and Werder Bremen will all face lower-division opposition.

In the Copa del Rey’s second round, top-division clubs will be playing away from home, all against opponents no higher than the third division. Teams involved include Alavés, Atlético Madrid, Celta Vigo, Espanyol, Getafe, Girona, Las Palmas, Leganés, Osasuna, Rayo Vallecano, Real Betis, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Valencia, Valladolid, and Villarreal.
