France, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, and the United States qualified for both the men’s and women’s tournaments. Both the men’s and women’s New Zealand teams ended their tournament in the group stage, while the other four nations had both teams in the quarterfinals. We head into the semifinals with only Spain having representation in both the men’s and women’s tournaments.

The Spanish men’s team convincingly took out Japan, while the women’s team needed to recover from two goals down to force extra time and win on penalties against Colombia.

The host nation saw their men’s team advance against Argentina, while their women’s team fell short against Brazil. Both games ended with a 1-0 scoreline.

The United States men’s team was thrashed by Morocco, while the women’s team narrowly advanced against Japan.

Egypt came out on top against Paraguay in the penalty shootout after a 1-all draw. This leaves Egypt and Morocco representing the African continent, while South America loses all its representatives in the men’s tournament.

Brazil, beating France in the women’s tournament, now carries alone the burden of winning an Olympic medal for South America.

The Canadian women couldn’t progress in chasing another gold to add to the one from the last tournament. They fell short in a penalty shootout against Germany.

Germany and the United States are the past gold medalists left in the women’s tournament. They will face each other in the semifinal. Spain, the current World Champions, will take on Brazil.

In the men’s tournament, we have two African teams and two European teams in a position to give us either an all-African final or an all-European final. Morocco takes on Spain, while the host nation, France, takes on Egypt.
