Iceland gets a great start to the Eruos.

Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, Saint-Étienne, Group F

Portugal 1 – 1 Iceland

Nani (31’)      Birkir Bjarnason (50’)

Iceland scored their first goal and got their first point in their first European Champions match. The 1-1 final scoreline would be seen as a win in the eyes of Icelanders and all their fans.

Iceland came into the match as underdogs, and the first half of the match made it clear that they were. Portugal was unlucky not to go up by a couple of goals by halftime. Nani’s goal in the 31st minute was the only reward for Portugal’s dominant performance in the first half.

Going into the second half, fans were wondering how many goals Iceland was going to concede by the end of the match.  It was a 50th-minute goal by Birkir Bjarnason that brought life back to Iceland. It was a goal that was against the run of play, but football is all about taking advantage when it presents itself.

Portugal continued to dominate the match. This was a match that most Portuguese fans would have calculated as a win.

Portuguese attack was frequent, but the few Icelandic attacks were dangerous enough to have stolen all points from the match.

At 1-1, Iceland is still very much in the competition. This is a team that finished their Euro 2016 qualification above the likes of Turkey and the Netherlands. This team might have some tricks up their sleeves in Group F.

Iceland will be playing Hungary in their next match. A match that Hungary will be looking to double their wins in Group F.

Portugal and Austria will be facing other. They are the pre-tournament favorite in Group F, neither would like to disappoint their fans.

As it stands in Group F
