German Bundesliga

Guardiola’s Bayern.

Was Guardiola’s time at Bayern a success?

Carlo Ancelotti will be replacing Pep Guardiola as Bayern Munich manager for the coming season. Guardiola will be moving to Manchester City. His time at Bayern had a lot of ups and a few downs. But for a team like Bayern Munich, a few downs can come across as massive failures.

He took over the team on 26 June 2013. 2013 was a big year for Bayern Munich. They had won the treble and were sitting on top in the world of club football. Guardiola taking over the team was a plus to the team. He had had a great run with Barcelona, where he won everything that was available to the team.

With Bayern already risen to the top of club football, Guardiola’s job was clearly to keep the team on top. Bayern strengthens their squad by buying domestically and internationally, even from their arch rivals. With every new signing announced, Bayern looked like the team to consume all other teams in the Bundesliga. The expectation of a title win became the minimum requirement for a majority of football/Bayern Munich fans. To exceed the basic requirement, the UEFA Champions League must be won.

Guardiola’s 3 years with the Bayern was a domestic success. He kept a streak of winning the Bundesliga title every year he was with Bayern, and also kept a streak of getting knocked out in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League by a La Liga team. His first season with Bayern, Bayern Munich was in the Champions League as defending champions. They were on top and after thrashing FC Barcelona the previous year to a 7-0 aggregate scoreline, they were definitely the team to beat. Bayern was knocked out at the semi-final stage by the eventual champions, Real Madrid.

The following season, Barcelona got their revenge and knocked out Bayern in the semifinals of the Champions League.

And in his final season, Bayern was paired with Atletico Madrid at the semi-final stage. They were the favorite to win in that matchup, but Atletico Madrid defensive approach to the match was good enough to eliminate Bayern on the away goal rule.

A champions league would have strengthened the legacy of Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich. If Carlo Ancelotti comes in and wins the league for a couple more seasons, that might further weaken Guardiola’s legacy.

There are lots of opportunities for Guardiola to add to his personal legacy. Taking over Manchester City will be a chance for him to take on another league. His resume will predict that he will be a success, but for now, we wait.
