Group D and Group E will each have 3 teams fighting for the final ‘knockout stage’ spot on the final day of the preliminary round

Day 9

Group D – Nigeria vs Iceland

Date – June 22, 2018

Venue – Volgograd Arena

Goal Scorers – (Nigeria) Ahmed Musa 49’ 75’

Nigeria is in a position where a point on the final day of the preliminary round could be enough to send them to the ‘Round of 16’

A second-half brace from Ahmed Musa handed Nigeria a victory that put them in the driver’s seat of their World Cup destiny. The ‘2-0’ victory for Nigeria over Iceland has the group open on the final group games on Tuesday, June 26, 2018.

June 26, 2018

Argentina and Iceland will both be in need of a victory to have a chance of moving on from Group D.

Argentina must beat Nigeria to advance from Group D

The hope will be that Croatia will be able to deny Iceland a win, while Argentina picks up a win against Nigeria. (Or Argentina will have to get a victory in a fashion that will cover the goal-difference between them and Iceland)

Iceland must do the improbable by beating Croatia.

Group E – Brazil vs Costa Rica

Date – June 22, 2018

Venue – Zenit St. Petersburg

Goal scorers – (Brazil) Philippe Coutinho 90+1, Neymar 90+7

Costa Rica is eliminated after another L

Two ‘injury-time’ goals allowed Brazil to secure their first win in the 2018 FIFA World Cup while ending Costa Rica’s World Cup dreams.

Group E – Serbia vs Switzerland

Date – June 22, 2018

Venue – Kaliningrad Stadium

Goal scorers – (Serbia) – Aleksandar Mitrovic 5’

Goal scorers – (Switzerland) – Granit Xhaka 52’  Xherdan Shaqiri 90’

Switzerland bounced back from an early first-half goal with two goals in the second-half.

Before Xherdan Shaqiri scored the winning goal for Switzerland to get the win that open Group E for a final round showdown, Granit Xhaka struck a powerful shot from outside the penalty box to score the equalizer.

All the surviving teams in Group E have an opportunity to clinch a place in the ‘Round of 16’ with a victory. All the surviving teams can win the Group.

Serbia blew a lead to suffer a defeat that has (on paper) made their journey to the knockout stage tougher. Serbia will be needing a win against a Brazil side that will qualify from the group with a point.

Switzerland will need to beat an eliminated Costa Rica side in the final match of Group E. Nothing to lose and everything to gain for Costa Rica. The pressure will be on Switzerland to get the right result if Brazil does not do them a favor.
