WOMEN’s FOOTBALL AT THE 2020 Summer Olympics.
Canada will compete for Gold with Sweden while the USA will wait to contest for Bronze with Australia.
USA 0-1 CANADA
Jessie Fleming scored a 74th-minute goal from the penalty spot to get Canada a 1- 0 victory over the United States. The history of both teams brought the expectation that United States didn’t live up to. Despite the goal coming from the punishment of an accidental tacke at the edge of the box, Canada was worthy of advancing to the final.
AUSTRALIA 0-1 SWEDEN
It was a perfect start to the second half for Sweden when the scored the
only goal of the game in the first minute after the restart.
On the balance of play, Australia deserved more out of the match than the defeat.
Based on the tournament they’ve had, it is fitting that Canada and Sweden are going to play for the Gold Medal.
Five years ago, Sweden finished the Olympics with a Silver medal. they are going to the final as the only team in the 2020 olympics to win all their games [and all their games during the regulation time]
Canada has never finished in the top 2 of the podium but they’ve been the Bronze medalist in the last two tournaments. Canada gets an upgrade to their medal this year. It is really about how big of an upgrade Canada can pick up in the final.
Sweden goes from Silver to Gold or Canada gets to go from Bronze to Gold.
Despite being the most successful side in the competition, USA are on the brink of leaving without a podium finish in consecutive tournaments for the first time.
For both USA and Australia, this will be their first Bronze medal.
For Australia, it will also be their first medal.
For USA, it will be another medal to add to the 4 gold and the silver.
