EURO 2024: The last EIGHT!

The first two games of the Round of 16 resulted in 2-0 wins, with Switzerland and Germany securing a place in the quarterfinals by beating Italy and Denmark, respectively.

There were no upsets on the second day, despite Slovakia and Georgia being the first to score in their respective matches. The traditional favorites came from a goal down to secure wins and move into the quarterfinals, as England and Spain both advanced, with England needing extra time to achieve their victory.

France and Portugal advanced to the quarterfinals at the expense of Belgium and Slovenia, respectively, on the third day. Portugal needed a penalty shootout to get past Slovenia.

On the fourth day, the Dutch moved on with the Turks, while Romania and Austria bowed out.

🇨🇭 Switzerland ( 2 ) – ( 0 ) 🇮🇹 Italy 
The defending champions, Italy, are out of the tournament after being defeated by Switzerland. Remo Freuler scored the opening goal in the 37th minute (assisted by Ruben Vargas) to take Switzerland into the halftime break with a one-goal lead. Ruben Vargas doubled the lead in the opening minute of the second half, securing Switzerland’s place in the quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over Italy.

🇩🇪 Germany ( 2 ) – ( 0 ) 🇩🇰 Denmark
The host nation remains in the competition, as Germany moved on to the quarterfinals by beating Denmark. Kai Havertz scored from a penalty in the 53rd minute to give Germany the lead, shortly after Joachim Andersen’s goal for Denmark had been ruled out by VAR for offside by the thinnest of margins. Jamal Musiala scored in the 68th minute to double Germany’s lead, securing a 2-0 win over Denmark.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England ( 2 ) – ( 1 ) 🇸🇰 Slovakia 
Ivan Schranz opened the scoring in the 25th minute to give Slovakia a lead that lasted until almost the final whistle of the game. Slovakia was on the brink of knocking England out until Jude Bellingham scored from an overhead kick in the 5th minute of added time (90+5’) to level the score and force extra time. Harry Kane then scored the game-winning goal for England in the first minute of extra time.

🇪🇸 Spain ( 4 ) – ( 1 ) 🇬🇪 Georgia 
An own goal in the 18th minute allowed Georgia to take the lead, but Spain proved their worth by coming from behind to secure their place in the quarterfinals with four goals. Rodri leveled the score in the 39th minute, allowing Spain to start the second half on even terms. Three goals followed in the second half: Fabian Ruiz leaped onto a cross from Lamine Yamal to score the winning goal for Spain in the 51st minute. Nico Williams doubled the lead in the 75th minute, and Dani Olmo made it a three-goal margin victory by scoring the final goal of the game in the 83rd minute.

🇫🇷 France ( 1 ) – ( 0 ) 🇧🇪 Belgium 
Kolo Muani, who entered the game in the 62nd minute, had his shot deflected off Jan Vertonghen, resulting in an own goal for France in the 85th minute. France beats Belgium to book their place in the quarterfinal.

🇵🇹 Portugal ( 0 ) – ( 0 ) 🇸🇮 Slovenia 
After a goalless draw in which Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty, Portugal booked a place in the quarterfinals through a penalty shootout win over Slovenia. Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa was the star in the shootout, helping his side win the shootout 3-0.

🇷🇴 Romania ( 0 ) – ( 3 ) 🇳🇱 Netherlands 
Donyell Malen replaced Cody Gakpo in the 83rd minute and scored twice, adding to Gakpo’s 20th-minute opening goal, to secure the Dutch a 3-0 win against Romania.

🇦🇹 Austria ( 1 ) – ( 2 ) 🇹🇷 Turkiye 
Merih Demiral scored in the first minute to give Turkiye a lead and scored again in the 59th minute to provide Turkiye with the goal that ended up being the winner against Austria. Mert Gunok, Turkiye’s goalkeeper, made an amazing save in the dying minutes of the match to maintain their lead against Austria, sealing a win and a place in the quarterfinal.

 

THE 2024 EURO QUARTERFINAL

Friday, July 5, 2024:

Germany and Spain played the 2008 final, where Spain came out on top. France and Portugal played the 2016 final, where Portugal came out on top. These four teams will get a rematch in the quarterfinal of the 2024 Euro.

Saturday, July 6, 2024:

On Saturday, England takes on Switzerland, while the Netherlands faces Turkey. The underdogs will be Switzerland and Turkey, but nothing can be certain at this stage.
