Sporting CP, who enjoyed a stellar campaign last year, started their title defense on a positive note with a 3-1 win over Rio Ave in the opening fixture of the Portuguese Primeira Liga season. Benfica began their season with an away defeat against Famalicão. Newly-promoted sides AVS Futebol and Nacional also faced each other in the opening round of the Primeira Liga, and they both ensured their season started without a defeat by sharing the points in a 1-1 draw.
